Hi again,

Is mints like Polo and chewing gum now a no no forever?

I never thought of it before but I stopped smoking 2 years ago and since then have always had a piece of gum or a mint in my mouth........and today I am missing it big time.....

Thank you

why would you think these were a no-no?

There are no foods forbidden, we are not "dieting." I was told that on the morning of my surgery that if I had gum or mints they would cancel the surgery, but it has nothing to do with being "commited" to the band, just a safety thing. You can't eat or drink anything within so many hours of surgery.

Gum is only forbidden to SWALLOW it. But you really shouldn't do that anyway! (it used to be a bad habit for me)

I eat mints all the time and chew gum occasionally (but never ever ever swallow the gum).

Both are OK but I was told that chewing gum can cause more gas then pre band, since now us bandsters swallow more air due to how we have to chew our food so well. Seems to be truen in my case, I get more gas when I chew gum.

OK,

Now that I think of it i just presumed that one couldnt have those. At the moment I'm not sure exactly how I got the idea but it will come to me.......I have been doing research into weightloss surgery for 2 years and if I wasnt a chicken (and the Vitamin issues..)I would have had the DS.Somewhere along the way I got the idea that gum and mints are forbidden but cant remember if it was for another surgery.....

Thanks again. It is ok not to use those now.At least I can in future.

Nice day to all.

My Doc says no gum. Just by chance you end up swallowing it, so to just avoid the problem no gum.

I have not had gum since before I was banded but do not miss it much since never chewed it alot.

I chew gum, but I only chew a 1/2 a piece at a time, even pre-band, and I end up chunking it pretty soon after chewing it. Just don't swallow it! Same with mints, be careful not to gulp down a whole mint by accident. Otherwise, go to town!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
