Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am just beginning. June 25th is my consulation with the bariatric doctor. Then the week after with my cardiologist. I have had a major heart attack and I am 230 pounds, 5'2. Not sure what the BMI for that is but it has to be a lot. So my question is does anyone out there have any experience with Oxford Insurance? I am really hoping they cover this because I will probably have to stay in the hospital longer than most of you. I am trying to get it done at Mount Sinai in NYC, Dr. Kini- Anybody familiar with him:confused:

I do not have Oxfod, I have GHI and am being banded on June 23rd. If you are looking in the NYC area, you might want to consider Dr. Fielding or Dr. Ren---they are really pioneers in the field and have done TONS of lap bands---they are at NYU medical center. Good luck with your decision! Many insurance companies require a 6 month medically supervised diet, so you might want to start that if its required.

I have Oxford Freedom - they cover the procedure - if I remember correctly they did not require a 6 month diet - my particular plan also did not require pre-certification or a referral so I just breezed through. They were very nice on the phone - answered all my questions - my surgeon is not in network so there is a deductible and then they pay 80%. I know others who have the same insurance and they also had no problems. Give them a call! Good Luck and welcome to LBT.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
