not following diet post-op

Recommended Posts

Most likely nothing will happen to your band, but you still need to listen to your doc about the diet.

This was my post opt diet - as you can see I was ok to eat cream of wheat and grits........not mashed potatoes until week three....go figure that one?????? isn't Cream of Wheat harder than mashed potatoes? Anyhow.........hope this helps :cursing:

Day of Surgery and day after - Clear Liquids

First 2 weeks - Full liquids (High Protein Shakes, yogurt, milk, pudding, custard, strained Soup, Cream of wheat, grits, Cream of Rice, Tomato juice)

Weeks 3 & 4 - Soft foods (cottage cheese, eggs, canned chicken, tuna, or turkey, shaved deli meats, soft Beans, oatmeal, mashed or boiled potatoes with no skins, canned fruit, well-cooked tender vegetables.

Week 5 - Solid foods  regular textured introducing one new food at a time and monitor tolerance.

Do you have a post op diet that your dr. asked you to follow? There is a reason why he/she asked you to adhere to the diet. I know it's hard but try your hardest to stick to the Clear Liquids. Have you tried Jello? It's a bit more filling than broth and watered down liquids.

As for what you have done to the band...the what ifs have kept me on track...because I'm neurotic about stuff like that. If I fold and break the rules I automatically think the worst.

Get back on the clear liquids and follow the criteria that your Dr. gave you. I know that people were given different criteria...and that everyone has the "best surgeon" and "most sought after surgeon" in the universe but you chose yours because you trusted his/her competence. It's now time to trust that he/she gave you the best advice that they could give. You can't know for sure that you didn't do damage to your band but you can get back on the wagon and do your best to follow it through.

I was banded on the 10th and only had to do clear liquids for 3 days now I am on full liquids till week three......you always need to follow your doctors orders but I am allowed cream Soups, pudding and nothing thicker than yogurt.......call them and ask if you can go to full liquids...the tomatoe Soup shouldn't be a problem it is approved on my diet but the cheese.....

Just pick yourself up, forget about it, don't let it happen again and go back on plan, we can do this!

Before we could have something off plan and just have "fallen off the wagon" but this time we could do possible damage to our band.......

Really, clear liquids for 2 weeks? You should call your doctor, explain that you are having difficulty following that, and ask for advice. Either he tells you to stick to it or he lets you advance on to regular liquids (like Tomato Soup and Meal Replacement shakes). But you need to stick to what your doc told you or you risk screwing up your band in the long run -- you do not want your stomach churning to digest solid food like cheese when you've just had surgery.

It's important to stick to the diet and avoid solid foods so your band can settle in and scar tissue can form to anchor it in place. Liquids keep your stomach from churning to digest as it does with solids. (How your stomach knows which is which, is something I still ponder!) Don't jeopardize your investment in your health and your future by ignoring the rules you were given.

Think how awful it would be to have to tell your surgeon, "But someone on the Internet said it was okay!" :cursing:

Hang in there. You can do this.

There's so many choices for full liquids. You can puree almost anything and it tastes the same with adding spices. Soups helped me a lot. See if your doctor will allow you to go on full liquids right away.

If you trip up just move on... If you beats yourself up it will only cause more problems. I am sure that the band is still ok unless you are having side effects after eating the cheese.

If you're having a hard time I agree with the others call the doctor and ask for suggestions of things to add in that are on the 'approved' list. Your doctor may even let you advance. He is is the one trained to make these descicions.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
