Hi, I'm Maribella, New here

Recommended Posts

Hello to everyone, I'm new here although I've been in the background for a month or so. I've been researching the lap-band and by now I'm very certain that I will get it done. I've been calling doctors in Mexico to get quotes on package prices. My only problem is that I don't like to fly, therefore my only option is to go Greyhound(takes almost 3 days). I also checked the prices here in Tampa Florida, and they are almost three times what they are quoting me in Mexico. You see i'm selfpay and every penny counts. It may sound very crazy to go this way and by myself but its the only option that I have. I just recently moved to Tampa from the Virgin Islands(St. Croix). My husband is here on Active Duty with the Air Force, I started researching the Lap-band because they don't do these type of surgeries at home. They usually send you abroad for any major surgery.

I also have been looking around in the other forums but there isn't any other like this one.

Welcome to LBT! Glad to have you here.

So, flying is absolutely not an option, right? So much so that you will ride the Greyhound for 3 days, right? Well, you will certainly save money that way!

You will get lots of great info here on Lap Band Talk. Everyone is really nice and helpful. Welcome!!!

ThankYou

Flying, Hmm..... NOPE!!!

I've gone with Greyhound from Mississippi to Detroit and from Detroit to Mississipi also from Florida to Detroit and the other way around. Long trip but otherwise O.k.

Yoy really don't save much, everytime you stop you buy food, and 3 days going and 3 days coming sure ads up

Wow, girl, you really don't like flying! Stick with Monterrey docs, you don't want to have to ride all the way to Tiajuana! Any docs you have your eye on?

Search your doc of choice in the Search button up top. You will surely find good info. Good luck! and keep us posted!

I've heard of Dr. Rodriguez in I believe Acuna

and the other one I was researching was in Bajanor Medical center in Tijuana

and dr. Ponce de leon in Tijuana . The most reasonable one was in acuna and it was the shortest ride going trough texas'

Do you know of any one in Monterrey at a reasonable price

Okay, check your map before going to Monterrey and make sure it's the closest big city to Florida. BUT, I found three in Monterrey that seem to be good according to the folks here but please do your own research.

Just doing a search on LBT for Monterrey, I found Dr Sanchez (Alice, Vera, gypj, and Isa all used him) and Dr Rumbaut (GeezerSue used him and I am certain there are others) and then Dr Rodriguez (Dr Rod) has several patients here too. All three have been thumbs up experiences for those listed, but like I said, dig around in here.

You may be able to find web addresses for these docs, too. Some of these folks may reply to this thread with info as some time passes, give them a chance to check in.

Hi Jack, I also checked my options in train , but it is taking me longer than 3 days that way, so i think that I'm going to stick to Kathys advice, I am now checking doctors in Monterrey and Dr. Sanchez seems like an option for me, the only problem is that greyhound does not have a stop in monterrey, they have a stop in Mata Morros Mexico. it supposed to be close to Monterrey, I will call tommorow to Dr. Sanchez # and find out what they are willing to do for me, They are very accomodating people, they will go the extra mile

Kathy Thank You for researching this for me, that is one of the reasons I picked LBT.com, everyone here is so friendly and helpfull!!!

Maribella,

I too had to pay out of pocket for mine. Well worth it! Dr. Fusco in Melbourne, FL did mine on 4/18/05. Total cost was $15,550 which includes one year of fills and follow up.

Hmmmm! Lookie there Maribella! Seems like Dr Rod is around 8-9K, so I don't know if it's worth paying the extra to stay in the states? You will have travel expenses to MX, and usually the fills are free for life in MX, but you have to get there!

something to consider...good speaking up David! Networking at it's best!!!

Hi Maribella

Dr. Sanchez and his staff are very accommodating!!! Ready4Achange.com Call Judy or alma, the phone numbers are on the websight. His price is about 8K. I adore Dr Sanchez and his staff, he takes care of his patients.

On one of my visits to Monterrey I met a lady, Lynn from San Antonio Tx. She takes the bus and Sergio, picks her up from the buss station. She says It's a 3 movie ride....

The best of luck to you.

Welcome Maribella! Good for you for doing the research to find the best option. I was self-pay too, so every penny did count. Luckily we were able to take out a Home Equity Line of Credit to help.

Good luck in your search.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
