How long do you take to eat?

Recommended Posts

20-30 minutes was good for me also in the very beginning until my second fill.

However, now that I have reached good restriction, it can sometimes take up to an hour for me to eat. Eating too fast can make me miserable and I have learned what speed is appropriate for different kinds of food. Even a food like an egg omelet, which is relatively soft and easy to eat, will block me up if I do not eat slow enough.

I guess if food is only passing through my stoma in a trickle, it doesn't take long to cause an overflow through the other end if I eat too fast. :0)

It usually takes me about 25 to 30 minutes to eat as well. I used to have a problem with eating too fast and getting stuck a lot. So I tend to take my time and wait a bit between bites just to make sure everything is going down well.

I wish it took me longer. I am having trouble slowing down. I usually take about 20 minutes at the most, but I don't feel any restriction. I've had one fill on May 19 and will have another one next week. I know there is more than one reason for learning to eat slow. It takes at least 30 minutes for your brain to get the message, plus food may get stuck when the restriction is right.

I'm waiting for my band to talk to me just a little bit more.

I just got banded on June 12th.

When you have the right restriction, what happens when you eat to fast? What does it feel like when food is stuck?

This is one of the hardest things for me, but, boy do I have to slow down. If I eat ANYTHING too fast, I PB it back up. I got my first fill yesterday - 2 ccs in a 10 cc band- we started with 3 but I had a hard time with water...

Learning more all the time - I have the food types down and am learning what to avoid, but I still eat too fast- old habits die hard, eh? I am trying to take at least 20 mintues and chew, chew, chew. I will get there - I love the band!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
