Considering banding in Manitoba

Recommended Posts

Hi Janet!! Congrats on making the decision to get the lap band! You wont regret it! I got mine July 22, and *slinkymalinky* got hers on August 5th and we are both doing great! :-) The Optifast gets easier I found as you go, so your well on your way! The surgery is a breeze (well we found anyways) its more the incisions that are a little bothersome afterwards, but you will be up and around that night. The doctors are wonderful there and I think you will be very happy! Definately keep us posted and hopefully we will meet one day! Good luck on the Optifast, you'll do great and be so proud you didn't cheat in the end! Take Care!

Hello My name is Janet

I am on Optifast now It is going okay I haven't been cheating and not really hungry. My surgery is booked for Oct 14th. Looking forward to it but scared at the same time. I am a nurse and work on MaternitySurgical floor so have have some idea about surgery. Only met one of the doctors and he was very nice. The clinic is very helpful with any questions.

Wish me luck and will keep you posted.

Hi Janet,

Congratulations on making the big decision. My surgery date was June 24th and have been doing fine since. Hang in there with the Optifast, it will be over before you know it. I was also scared but they are really great at Maples and help you with that. Keep us posted and feel free to ask any questions.

Hi It's Janet.

Had my surgery Oct 14th doing good, starting to eat solids and doing good. Have my first fill on Nov 25th. I think it is worth the money I had to pay out at the Maples. Great care.

Hello ladies from winnipeg! I'm going to Maples Surgery Center Nov 4/08 for a pr-op meeting and am hoping to have my surgery jan/09. I've been reading your comments and haven't seen anything too concerning in what you've had to say about it. Some of you had your surgery a few months ago. How are you finding having the band? Would you do it again? Are there any support groups in Winnipeg? Please give me any advice you feel is important to share. Looking forward to hearing from you all. Cheers! Joanne

Hey

I had my surgery on Oct 14th at the maples doing good just really tired at times. Dr Bracken and Dr Andrews are both very nice. I had no problem at the Maples Clinic. very helpful.

Good luck with your pre-op.

Janet

I was wondering if anyone can really just go step by step and say everything they had to do to get the surgery. I know my mom is doing gastric and she had to go on a 6 month diet before hand. Is this how it works with private clinics as well or is it different? Also, does the adjuster/fill thing stick out of your body or is it just under the skin? And how did everyone pay for it. I am only 22 so financing would be my option. I would like to hear all comments, good or bad. Thanks

hello everyone, I am going for my first consultation on Dec. 30th. I am not sure how long after that surgery can be scheduled. I HATE the idea of having to pay for the whole procedure myself, but there are no doctors in Manitoba that do it through Manitoba health. My family doctor tried to get me into see a doc in Alberta, however, he has a cutoff age of 50 for the patients he sees. I'm hoping that I can get the surgery done in early 09.

Hi everyone, I'm starting my opti-fast diet tomorrow, surgery is Feb.3rd. At the Maples they give out all chocolate now since the response to the vanilla was very poor. I was glad to find out that I'm allowed to eat veggies (2cups a day) as well so that its not just liquid. Still looking for instructions on how to post a ticker with msgs.....any help would be appreciated. Thanks, M.

hi everyone, I'm five days in to the Optifast diet and doing well so far. I had to play around a little to get it to a consistency that was palatable for me. Its not THAT bad tasting, but I don't think I would want to be on it for a year like Oprah. I FINALLY got my ticker working.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
