I too have been notified that I have to quit smoking before LB surgery. I certainly do dread it. My doc said I need to quit smoking at least 6 week before surgery. Don't have a date yet. I appreciate any advise anyone can give me. I have smoked for 30 years. I know I will feel much better after I get past it. I am just now going for some of the test. They want to do a ABG which is a blood gas and I don't want to do that. It must be routine for my doc. I hear that thing hurts like crazy. Did anyone else have to have this done.

Man, I am such a loser. I tried to quit and did it for 3 weeks. Then flunked. Dog got sick, I got stressed and in the cigarette went. I suck!!!

Please quit babs! I want some good news about someone else having more will power than I do! I cut down about 1/2 the amount (smoking about 6-7 cigs a day now) but I am still smoking now after the band. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR! And I HATE it so much!

YOU CAN DO IT YOU CAN DO IT!

Not sure why this was addressed to me? but I too was a smoker up until about 2 years ago (over 40 years). I recerived a less than wonderful report from my Doc on a test checking on my arteries - scared hell out of me - of course we ALL know we need to NOT smoke - but sometimes it just takes a wake-up call. Anyway, I used the Patches - per directions exactly. I put my coffee on to perc every morning, showered and put a new patch on immediately! So, by the time I was dressed and on the way to work, the nicotine was flowing:rolleyes: and I made it through the toughest part (smoking and gossiping with friends outside). Hubby quit years ago, so no problem there.

Now if only I could get my Daughter to quit . . . .

She's having surgery 6/20 and has promised to really, really try, She smokes way less than a pkg a day (I was up over 2 pkgs a day!) so hopefully whe will kick it! My surgery is the 7th - Dr. Powell in Dallas - I'm so excited!

NYgirl and Rae: THat is really wonderful that you quit!!! Lets try to keep it going.

Dixie: YOu make it sound depressing! Am I gonna be craving cig's 2 years later and thinking about them every three or 4 hours? THat is really scary. Now, I am really freaked out.

I had one this morning, but so far nothing more. Like I said, I got one in the pack, but to me this is like my security blanket, so I am not gonna smoke it! LOL

Babs in TX

So sorry to sound depressing! I was joking! Honestly! That was the best thing I've ever done for myself - including my 6/7 surgery coming up!

I feel so proud, to not have to go outside for a smoke. I'm a pretty independent lady and it just galled me that something - ANYTHING - could control me! NOT!

I wish you sucess! And you CAN do it!

Dixie

I used to smoke when I was younger. After I quit I'd have regular dreams that I lit up, and I'd wake up really upset with myself. It would take a few minutes before I realized it was just a dream. Then I'd quickly look around for butts or an ashtray to make sure it wasn't real They are powerful little devils, that's for sure. But you're one of the toughest broads around here, plus you have all us. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
