How soon should I start loosing before surgery?

Recommended Posts

My appointment with my PCM isn't till next week. I don't wanna loose too much before we submit to Tricare for the surgery because I wanna make sure I am still eligible without comorbitities. I wanna start loosing now to get ahead of the game though.

It is probably going to take awhile for approval. It took me about 7 months and the insurance approved me in 3 days. I had dieticians, psychologist, preop nurses, medical testing - extensive, preop with surgeon and finally the surgery date. When you meet with the surgeon, he will probably want you to lose some weight to make the surgery safer - they want to see less fat/loose fat around the liver as it has to be moved so they can put on the belt. From the time I met the surgeon until the surgery was about 2 weeks. So, basically, you will need to be on a diet just before surgery. Your doctor or others will tell you when and how to start. You can start now - practice with the nutritionist diet - it took me awhile to get use to the high Protein diet and to eat without liquid.

Lots of luck - hope you get approved!

Thanks, my husband is military, so I have Tricare. My BMI is 43, so I'm pretty sure I'll get approved. The surgeon told me that the wait here on post is only about 3 months from the time you go to the seminar, so I'm hoping she is right. I do know one lady here on post that had gastric bypass that took her 18 months to get everything done, but I think they have more testing and stuff to do to get approved.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
