Anyone else noticed?

Has anyone else noticed the significant increase in the amount of posts from folks saying that they were just banded and they are eating things that are not normally permitted till months down the road? Im finding it increasingly difficult to bite my tongue. I just dont get it........why would anyone willingly subject themselves to a weight loss surgery and dish out a ton of money and risk the complications involved by not following the set dietary guidelines and rules??? I mean come on now lets get real here, if your throwing caution to the wind after being banded a week or so, statistically what does that say for your chances of success in the long run! Why even bother to of had a weight loss surgery if your sabotaging yourself from the get go. Had to get that off my chest.

HI, I was too scared to eat anything that was not on the 1- 4 weeks post op because I thought I would damage myself or the band. I can not see how you can solids right after surgery when you are in so much pain. By no means am I criticizing anyone, its just dangerous not to follow the rules that are given.

I can agree with both of you. It's getting ridiculous.

Different docs give different aftercare instructions. I was stunned to read some stuff patients were saying their docs told them. Now, I just hold my tongue....

It's so hard to hold your tongue though, I mean some people say their doctor's said solids after like 2 or 3 days...and I'm thinking to myself "Disaster waiting to happen, we're going to have another person with probs from what they did blaming the band" etc.

It just gets really frustrating.

I couldn't agree more. It's one thing for doctors to have different aftercare instructions, but quite another for one to say, "I'm supposed to be on liquids but I ate a piece of chicken" or "I'm a week out and just ate Cookies, candy, cake, a shake....." It is really just stupid and dangerous. Why bother with surgery if you can't follow the guidelines? We all know going in what to expect afterward.

I feel very fortunate that I found this forum so early in the process. I've seen that several people have done things against their doctor's advice, but I also have come across so many questions that I would have never thought to ask my doctor. Also, there's so much to learn that I might have gone on information overload and not comprehended it. Now, I have plenty of time to browse the forum, pick up tips, and hopefully not have too many surprises. I know I'll have my challenges, but having all this wisdom at my fingertips will help me get through those times. It's really ashame there's a increased number of people who may be handicapping their success before they even get started. Addiction is hell.

YES! That's exactly the way I feel. Seeing the pitfalls ahead of time is exactly what I need. There's no way for me to plead ignorance now, which will help me tremendously.

I just posted about this in another thread. I am only 2 weeks post op and it's driving me nuts the number of posts I'm reading about how they've eaten things they weren't supposed to. It's one thing when the dr. has different guidelines, I can't really fault someone for following their dr.'s guidelines even if they differ so from mine or most. But it's another a few days post op and eating pizza. I mean I just paid thousands to have this done, gone through all the pre op testing, liquid diets, pain of surgery, and to even chance messing it up by doing something like that seems crazy to me.

I want this surgery so badly that it can't happen soon enough! The last thing I would do is sabotage it or my progress by not following my doctor's instructions. I am determined to do exactly what I am instructed because I want to succeed!

I will also be a self-pay and I can't imagine dishing out all that money and then not following through. I would feel guilty over the expense since the money could be spent on so many other things. However, my husband and I feel that this is a great investment with the reward of improving my health, improving my self-esteem, and so many other things. My husband is considering the surgery too after hearing me talk about it so much.

Yes, it kind of ties in with my which kind are you post over in Rants n Raves. I cant understand it. I just cant understand how anybody can be determined enough to fix their weight problem to have surgery, to invest the kind of money it costs you guys over there and then CHEAT! Its incredible.

I really hope they can just get back on the bike and keep going. Because to me, it just doesnt say an awful lot about your commitment to the band, nor an understanding of how the band really works.

My DH is worrying me. He was banded 2 weeks ago. He was perfect on liquids, but what he says is a mushie and what IS a mushie is two different things.

I lost tons of weight in the first few weeks, was lucky to have awesome restriction and I honestly found it super easy. He's got his appetite back really soon and no restriction at all. I'm having to bite my tongue and remind myself this time is for healing, and that the band doesnt really work well till its filled.

But potato chips are NOT a mushie, grrrrrr. And what happened to the "I'm going to power walk every day?".

I just found this thread... amen! WTF are people thinking? How many threads are there on Soda, Beer, Ice Cream, eating solids before they are ready... Ugh!

It's one part laziness (there is a seach feature), and one part search-for-justification (needing to hear that they are OK doing what they are doing instead of being told that they need to incorporate more changes to how they operate around food, instead of operating food to go around the band.

I was banded 5/16 was on full liquid for a week, mushies for 2 weeks then regular food. From day 1 I had 0 restriction and have used will power and exercise to get rid of 19lbs. I hope when I get my first fill on Monday that I start to get some restriction. Right now I can eat steak bread and anything else I would want to. I guess I understand how your husband feels hopefully both he and I will not be constantly hungry after our fill!!! I know my goal is to eat less work out more and lose weight .... but it is hard when you don't have the assist of the band.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
