July 25 for me! Failure is not an option

Recommended Posts

I had my second appointment with my surgeon last week and got my surgery date - July 25!!!! I'm so excited and READY! On my way into the surgeon's office I saw a license plate holder on a car in the parking lot that was exactly what I needed to see - "Failure is Not an Option". Talk about being in the right place at the right time! I decided right then and there that is my new motto.

I have to lose 10 lbs. before my next appointment in a month so I'm workin' it. I've already lost 10 lbs in the last month so I'm keeping on doing what I'm doing. It's not a picnic but I'm recording my food and trying to eat like I'm going to have to do after surgery anyway - pay close attention to my fullness while eating, Protein first, veggies next. Have already pretty much given up grains/starch anyway. I've weighed my Protein for a couple of years as a Weight Watchers thing (off and on before then too). Quantities have been pretty reasonable by listening to my stomach but I'm still feeling too full. When I look at my food I try and picture a cup and it really does put portion size in perspective.

Just trying to take it a day at a time. The doctor suggested I start doing 2 shakes a day to get used to the feeling, but I'm not quite that brave yet. I'm planning on transitioning to that a couple of weeks pre-op.

I like our July Butterflies name! My thanks to everyone for being here and sharing their experiences - triumphs, setbacks and everything in between.

It looks like you are on your way to being successful with your positive attitude and really taking control of what you eat. BTW, doing the shakes aren't too bad.

NewJEM congratulations on the surgery date! I had mine on the 10th and am soooo glad that I did it. Failure is not an option has been my mantra through this and I'm more than happy to share it with someone else!! You have to keep the positive outlook. We are taking control of our lives again and there is definately no room to fail when you are doing that. Good Luck!!

Dana

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
