NYU Medical Records Question

Recommended Posts

I'm back with more newbie questions....I have my Nutrionist/NP appointment in a few weeks. I've been pulling together all of my medical records but I'm a little confused.

NYU askes fo rhte following:

  • Records of a complete physical from your physician, including standard blood test (CBC, comprehensive metabolic, liver test, and TSH)
  • Medical history and physical from your primary care physician, including any co-morbidities (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure)

I just had my annual physical (but with a new PCP -- my old one wasn't covered on my insurance) this week. I have copies of the results of my blood tests, pulmonary tests and EKG. However, I'm not quite sure what the difference is between items 1 and 2 on the list. Is this just a copy of my chart? Should I reach out to my old PCP and get my medical records as well?

Sorry to be so dense -- I just don't want to show up at my consult and waste everybody's time by not having my paperwork in order.

Hi Kristen. I just submited my docs to NYU and pretty much 1 and 2 are the same. The first bulleted item and a letter from your pcp is basically what they are looking for (I think). Nilsa, the woman collecting medical docs can be really difficult and a little curt so when you see her (after you meet with your surgeon) make sure you ask her your questions. She is hard to get a hold off once you leave her office ( although she gives you her card) ..i hope im not too discouraging. NYU is the best by far but Nilsa and the paper work is a a reall pain in the neck ...Good Luck

Thank you! They seemed nearly identical to me as well -- which is why I was confused.

If you don't mind me asking, who is your surgeon and what your experiences been like so far?

Hi, I'm at NYU too. Dr. Kurian is my surgeon. Make sure you ask if the surgeon you are planning to see participates with your insurance. Apparently, each surgeon participates with different companies. Does your insurance require a 6 month diet. If so, make sure you have records that document the diet and exercise plan you followed when you go for your consult. My tentative surgery date is July 1 so I am supposed to start the pre-surgical liquid diet on Tuesday, but I still don't know if insurance has approved the surgery. Am scheduled for pre-surgical testing this week too. Waiting is making me crazy (and cranky--as my family has pointed out). Good luck to you. Let us know how the consult goes.

My surgeon is Dr Kurian. She seems really nice and patient. I really like her its just Nilsa ( the insurance coordinator) has been kinda annoying, Im scheduled for July 10th but i dont think she has submitted anything to insurance yet. She hasnt kept me posted at all :)

I will be banded at NYU as well....Dr. Ren here. I am in my 5th month of my 6 months required by insurance and will be seeing the nutritionist July 10th. Hopefully I will have surgery in September sometime. I have heard from other people that some of the office staff can be a little interesting, so do let us know if they ask you to submit anything further. Good luck with everything! Question...do any of you go to the support group meetings at NYU (or do you plan to after being banded)? Thanks!

Hi Lauren,

Your consult is just a few days after mine! (I'm meeting with Dr. Kurian on the 7th).

I'm planning on going to the support group this Wednesday night -- I figure the more of a support system I put in place around me before, during and after the surgery, the more successful I will be.

Drop me a note if you want to go/meet-up beforehand. It's always intimidating walking into a room full of strangers!

Wendy,

Keep us informed on how you are doing and if you need anything in the coming weeks. (Including a safe place to be cranky!)

Waiting is HELL -- but you're in the final stretch now!

Hi all!!

Just a shout out to all my NYU bandster buddies!!! I know exactly what you are going through and feeling as I was there just a couple of weeks ago. Yes, the staff is...... less than friendly ...... but keep pushing them. Try email if you can - it was the only way I could ever get in touch with anyone there.

For those of you seeing Dr. Kurian - she is a god send! So nice, gentle and caring. I really loved her. I went through my surgery alone and was terrified being at the hospital waiting room waiting to go. She came to see me and talked to me for a bit which helped and she held my hand until I was knocked out. She really made it so much easier for me.

Best of luck to all of you!!!! Keep in touch! Maybe we could all meet up at a meeting on day.

Hi!

I am scheduled to have my surgery on July7 by Dr Fielding at NYU. It has been quite a journey to get my surgical coordinator, Asia to get on the ball. I have Magnacare and Fielding, who is the only one who accepts it, will be dropping it a week after my date. I know NYU is the best. If anyone has continually called to get a response, it has been me. I even spoke to the office manager, Maryanne and she promised to call me back and didn't. How rediculous is that!! Finally, my insurance company had a conference call with me, Asia and a really nice lady at my co. who has helped me, with the lead man listening in! Asia and I didn't know. It was kind of cool. That got Asia's butt moving. Are you guys going to be overnight or 23 hour stay? Apparently, there is not a difference in the accommidations so Asia changed me to a 23 hr stay.

Later, I found out that it was less work for her if I didn't stay overnight!

I have been on my liquid diet for three LONG days now. This is so hard! :) Hanging out on the forums on this site have been a support and I'm glad I came across you guys! Look forward to hearing from you all soon!:biggrin2:

Hey folks -- I'm putting together an NYC area get together on Sunday in Park Slope, Brooklyn. (Sorry to spam -- just wanted to make sure everyone who might want to come knows about it.)

Barb: Keep up the good work! You're surgery is only 1.5 weeks away -- how exciting!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
