Yesterday I went to the sergons office to get information what options there are for weight loss. I have a BMI of 48 and he did not recommend the Lap Band stating that only about 30-40% of people that get the band actually lose weight. He also stated that they people that lose weight only lose about 30-40 pounds. Has anybody else heard anything like this? I see that lots of people are loosing more than 30-40 pounds. :P

Yes, My doctor told me that there was a bell curve for weight loss with the band. He said it depends on how hard you work and stick to the plan they give you. It is only a tool to help, not like bypass. I have two friends that have lost to their goal weight and one that is not because she is eating to much. When he told me the curve was divided into three groups, people that cheater all the time, ones that follow almost all the time, but still cheat some, and superstars who don't cheat, I knew I wanted to be a "superstar" and would do what it took to make it work. I was not going to invest all the time and money and not be successful. I think it is what you make it.

While it is true that the band takes work so do all of the other proceedures. Even without working you will probably lose substantial weight with the band. I tend to doubt very seriously those statistics. I have know some people that didn't lose much with the band but they worked really hard at not losing. The band is just a tool. It allows YOU the time and some help in changing YOUR habits. I think the vast majority of people lose considerable with teh band. You might go to www.wlsfacts.com and use the ask a Dr feature to ask a barriatric surgeon about the success results.

Good luck in whatever you choose. Above all remember that it is YOUR choice and you wanat to choose a program you think will have the best results for YOU.

I get so mad when I hear this!

All WLS types are tools! Yes the bypass does make you lose in the begining without trying. But afer time many of these patients wil go back to thier old eating habits and eventually thier pouches will begin to get bigger and if they don't work at eating the right things they will gain weight back. I know of a few people personally who have gained 40 plus pounds back. I also know 2 that have had the lap-band ontop of the bypass.

I talked to one of those friends one day and she said that she wished she had gotten the band. I asked he why she had lost over 130 with the bypass. She explained to me about stretching the pouch and eating to much and lossing the restriction feeling that she had in the begining.

She said to me you are so lucky because you can always go in for fills and never lose that restriction!

If you can find a Dr that only does the Lap-Band and if you can go to a seminar you will hear a different side I'm sure.

Good luck.

Where are ou located I may know someone in your area that just does the band.

Thanks for all the info. I understand that WLS is just a tool but the way he explained it was that you will never lose more than 30-40 pounds. I mentioned to him that I've seen that people have lost more weight than that but I'm not sure he understood what I ment.. I could hardly understand him.. I went to a group in Elmira NY. I think for now I'm going to get with a nutritionist for 6 months to a year and see what happens there before making any decisions on surgery. I don't have any of the health problems ( yet ) but would like to lose the weight before the health problems come. Thank you everyone for the info. This is a great site for Info...

Nothing is harder then walking into a doctors office and having them tell you "oh this won't work for you" Its one of those moments when its all I can do to look at them and say "how do you know if you start out the appointment with the opinion that i'm going to fail"

I haven't had my first appointment yet, i've been a slacker when it comes to faxing in paperwork although i'm going to get that done on monday.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
