I am a bandit...um bandster

Recommended Posts

well I had my surgery yesterday. all went well. I was admitted to the hospital at 7 AM and released at 1230 pm. It took me forever to get home because of the flooding (4 hours when it normally takes 1.5) I am doing well! My husband is shocked at how well I am doing...under the circumstances. He joked that I need to get a heart and lung transplant to see how I react. I am not on a clear liquid diet so when I got home I had some Tomato Soup. It tasted a bit funny but I didn't mind. My mouth still has a funny taste in it...I guess that is what the mints on the list I got from you all are for. After I ate Soup DH and I went for a walk around the neighborhood. I rested for a bit and then just hung out then went to bed. My Dr. gave me Vicodin pills...I thought he would give me liquid did anyone else get pills? DH raised up the head of our bed a little (with books) and that has helpped...I feel like I am pg again with al the pillows I have around me but they help me get comfy! For those of you pre-band I just wanted to let you know that for me walking and a heating pad have helped a lot with the gas pain. My daughter doesn't understand why mommy can't pick her up but I hope that soon we will be able to at least snuggle.

I just wanted to give you all an update!

YAY for us! I was banded at 1pm yesterday. I'm in Mexico and have stayed the night in the hospital. The only pain I have had is from the insertion of the IV (apparently my veins were rolling around and not letting the nurses stick me). As far as the lap band cuts, the only thing I feel is a little pressure maybe from the liver holder or from the port site, but I'll take pressure over pain anyday. I hope I'll be sent home with some pills, yeah baby. In the 3-4 days before my surgery I was nervous that my allergy cold was going to delay me, but the dr. said to take claritin, and it worked.:P

My veins were rolling too! they had to stick me 5 times to get one. :) I would say I have a dull pain...but I am up and about. I feel like I have to burp...you know one of those painful burps...that is what I feel like a lot of the time but I can't burp.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
