pay out of pocket or fight insurance?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have surgery scheduled for next month with SBC in AZ but I'm having trouble with Aetna insurance. I started with SBC hosp while it was in network but after my conference they changed to out of network and I didn't realize this until my surgery was ready to be scheduled. Now after several very long conversations the insurance company is advising that they 'might' be able to get me in with one of their network doctors - Dr. Fang or Dr. Simpson - So would appreciate any advice. Anyone know these doctors in AZ? I need to determine if I start all over with a new doctor for 50% coverage of pay out of pocket.

Thanks much

JP

JP - the lapband can be pretty pricey when it comes to fills, etc. If you can have it covered under insurance it is better. Aftercare, band removal, etc. etc. is very expensive. Good luck with your decision.

Given the price of fills, aftercare, and possible complications, I would consider changing hospitals or doctors. However, it is very important that you be comfortable with your doctor/clinic for this to be successful. I'm not from your area so I can't advise on specific doctors but I did change doctors/hospitals when I found out that my insurance would not cover the first one. Before the surgery is the best time to change. It ended up adding a few months to my journey but I think it was the best for me.

Good luck in your decision. The decision to have Lapband surgery has been great for me. I hope it will be for you.

If I had the possibility of insurance coverage, I would give the in-network docs a chance. For one thing, you never know what you may need in the future, and it seems it would be better to have started off with the group that's works with your insurance. Hopefully, your records can be transferred to the new office, and you won't be too far behind your current schedule. Of course, if you find you don't care for the new docs or that they don't have as good of reputation as the group you're with now, that might be enough reason to stick with the one you're currently seeing, even if it is out of pocket.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
