Just been banded 6/9/08

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am new to this forum. I was banded 3 days ago. I am having trouble drinking my Protein Shakes. I am not hungry which is making it hard to get them down. But I have been drinking a lot of Water. I am not sure if I am suppose to "not feel" hungry, I haven't had solid food since the Saturday before my surgery. Ugh.

I am new to this myself. I was banded a week ago today. I am having difficulty determining if I am hungry or if I am drinking to much liquid. I was told to sip the Protein Drink and Water very slowly. It should take up to an hour to finish the Protein drink and you shouldn't drink water a 1/2 before or 1/2 after finishing the protein drink. I may be drinking to much water. I sometimes feel nauseous at times and according to the literature I received from my surgeon, it may be a sign that I drank to much water. I think that it's normal in the beginning to work you way up the recommended amount Protein Shakes your surgeon recommends. For instance, my goal is to drink five per. I was told not to force it but works towards that goal. I hope this helps.

Thanks Benny, I feel nauseous too ....it is probably the Water. I'm gonna do as you suggested and not drink the water before and after my Protein drink, thanks for the help.

Hi and Welcome!

I never felt hungry until about 3-4 weeks after surgey. The ones that dont feel hunger are probably the lucky ones.

I had a hard time getting in all the Protein too. Do not panick this is just for a short time. I talked to my doctor and he told me to do the best that I can to get it down and I did. I turned out ok :tongue2:

just sip sip sip

My problem is not being able to distinguish full from hungry. I hope that it becomes more evident as things move along for. I love Water and I used to drink quite a bit before surgery so it's hard to cut back. Thanks for your reply. As you said I will continue to sip, sip, sip.

My doc never mentioned having Protein Shakes after surgery. All I have been told to do is be on full liquids now for two weeks. Most of the time I am not hungry at all but every now and then I get hungry and I just have something liquid. broth, soy milk, juice, pudding, apple sauce...yep they are allowed. She said as long as it isn't thicker than pudding.

I did try to have a Protein Shake today and didn't even get half way thru it. I was also told to try and get a GALLON of liquids a day, I know i am not getting close to that.:)

For some reason I have had quite a bit of pain and discomfort myself. I have hardly had anything all day but when I do drink something other than Water it hurts a lot...

I've been having pain in my chest everyday since my surgery (6/6). It happens about 20 minutes after I finish eating. This bout that I going through right now has been hurting for the last 5 hours. I'm calling the doctor tomorrow. This can't be normal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
