My Emotional Rollercoaster Peaked Today

Recommended Posts

I am at the end of my 6th day post-op. I guess the initial high from having the surgery is wearing off, because man, I've been in the dumps all day.

I'm tearful. I'm gloomy. I feel sorry for myself because I am STILL on Clear liquids and it's starting to get to me. I think I might have actually felt hunger today . . . which I hadn't felt yet post-op.

I think at some point I even regretted my decision. My brain doesn't regret it . . . but my heart is kind of falling apart right now.

I also feel like I *should* be feeling better . . . but, honestly, I am still having some pain from the surgery. some of it's gas and some of it is port pain, but it's pain nonetheless.

This may be TMI, but I'm also on my time of the month right now and it's really weird -- not like all of my other times of the month. Very strange.

I'm trying to focus on how exciting it is right now that I've lost so much weight . . . but my sad little brain can only see my shrinking boobs and very swollen belly. LOL. I know this too shall pass.

Thank you for letting me come here and let it out. Reading this forum is the only thing keeping me sane right now.

Being your time of the month ON TOP of just having surgery is probably playing havok with your hormones. Hang in there and if it gets too rough don't be afraid to call your doc for a bit of help.

Chin UP! Your body is going through changes and hormons(?) are off. I'm 4 day post-op and if you could of seen me on day 2, I was a mess, crying and thinking that I did the wrong thing.

Just hang in there, I know it must not be easy what you are going through, but just remember the excitement you had before the surgery, and you've done it you're almost through the hard "stage". I am on the process to have it done, and some times I don't know if I'm going to be able to get it done, because of insurance approvall and $$. So now that you have it hang in there, I am pretty sure once your period is gone, you'll feel better and whith the strenght to keep fighting. God Bless you and give you strenght

SanDiegoPhotog, don't allow your emotion, pain, liquid diet to get the better of you. You've done great to get this far and believe me IT WILL ONLY GET BETTER!! I remember going through the exact same thing, I thought it would never end. It took me about three weeks to start feeling normal again (normal?). Hang in there, get plenty of rest and give yourself time to heal. When you go in for your follow-up ask if you can start on mushies. I was allowed mushies after one week and that kept me a little more sane. Just remember, the sun will soon shine, see it coming over the horizon? {{{HUGS}}}

Dr. Bhoyrul let you have mushies one week post-op???!!!!!?????? oh you lucky girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!

I am feeling better today.

Thank you all for the words of encouragement.

I kept myself REALLY busy today since I felt like sitting at my desk instead of moping around the house. It kept my mind off my limited diet.

I felt the exact same way. The first week was tough with the pain, gas, feeling weak, etc. I completely had times when I thought "why the heck did I do this?" Now I am 3 weeks out and feel great and really excited about what is to come. It'll pass, I promise. You did a really loving thing for yourself, taking care of your health!

I know how you feel. My period started a couple days before surgery. So I know the emotional roller coaster your on. But it will pass. I didn't go through a deepression, but I felt bad cause I was begining to realize how much my life revolved around food. I'm 7 days post op and it seemed everything I did eventually ended up with me eating or snackin on something. I went to the movies and felt so left out that I didn't get to have popcorn or go out to dinner afterwards. And you might be sad at first. But I lost in 15lbs in 7 days and I love the way I fit in my clothes so I keep that in mind and I don't feel so bad. Remember you had major surgery. You gotta let your body heal and once it does you will feel sooo much better. It gets better everyday, believe me.

Hey..I know how you feel. 7 days out I was still feeling crappy but it was weird each day after that I would get up and feel myself getting better by the end of the day. By day 14 I felt really good. I know my body felt better because I started sneezing! :scared2:Boy let me tell you "OWWW" but I knew that it was a sign of me getting better. There were also my days of doubt. When that happened I'd go into my closet and try on clothes that I haven't been able to wear for awhile. Then I'd throw out the ones that were too big... Very liberating and that made feel better about everything.

You're doing great! Add more Protein to your diet and that'll help with the moodiness.

As much as we try to mentally prepare ourselves for life after surgery, we are going to hit a wall of reality at some point and wonder wtf we were thinking. My goodness, reading your post was like looking in a mirror. I was banded on 6/6 and it hit me yesterday on my long walk and in Target the severity of what I had done. But the miracle of walking out of Target with only toilet paper and sunglasses instead of chocolate, an iced mocha, cheez-its and clothes I don't need was incredibly liberating. Not only did I save money by only buying what I went in there for (I know, totally tough to do at Target!) but I freed myself from all the guilt associated with those other purchases as well as the calories, the fat, and the emptiness afterwards.

It's so hard right now with the limited diet, but I am taking it one meal at a time. I try not to think about the fact that I have 3 more days of this. One glass of Water, one Protein Shake, 4 baby bites of Jello at a time. Even on my period and with a swollen belly I've lost 10 pounds, so there is only one way to go from here- DOWN!

My trusted advisor told me I should think of 1 or 2 affirmations to tell myself when I'm walking to help me as I go through all these changes, like- I am becoming a better version of myself, I am a strong, beautiful woman, I am only responsible for my own choices, etc. to keep all the negative thinking out. Maybe that's something to try? And how great is it that we have a place like this where people we've never even met can help us feel better about what we're going through? Keep on truckin', San!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
