Cadets71 1 Posted June 9, 2008 Hi. I was banded on Thrusday , June 5th. My doctor wants me back on all my medications - a total of 16 of them! I am having trouble getting them down except in Jello but there are so many of them, I could eat a whole cup of jello just to get them down and I am limited to 3 Tablespoons of jello 3x's per day. Any suggestions/ideas on how to get all the crushed pills down?
Lunabeane 2 Posted June 9, 2008 Have you tried just taking them with Water? I have been taking all of my pills since the day after surgery. However, I did have to have one of my meds switched to liquid form. Remember, you cannot crush pills that are extended release. You could call your doctor and ask to write scripts for liquids for some of the larger pills. I spread my pills over a period of several hours and take them with water. I'm not sure why you are limited to such a small amount of Jello. I at jello after jello during my liquid stage. If he only wants you to eat small portions then spread it out throughout the day. BrownieUNC 0 Posted June 9, 2008 well, you just touched on my biggest complaint. I asked a MILLION TIMES about being able to take my other medications after surgery, and I was told not to worry about it - I could just crush the tablets and put them in liquid, and they would dissolve, and I could drink them. Well, it doesnt work! None of them dissolve in liquid...they just stick to the side of the glass, or sink to the bottom. I need these meds for other unrelated health problems, and they are not working as well as before. This was my biggest pre-op concern, not food. And I'm a little peeved that all the medical people downplayed and/or glossed over this aspect.
BrownieUNC 0 Posted June 9, 2008 I just read another similar thread where several people said that they were just told to go ahead and take their pills as usual and had no problems. I find that very interesting in that I was told the exact opposite. I'll be following up on this question tomorrow.
livn4jesus 0 Posted June 9, 2008 I researched my meds before my surgery this past thursday, the 6th. I found out which ones i could crush and which ones i could swollow. My doc said i could swollow any pill that wasn't larger than a regular sized aspirin. one of my other meds i am breaking into small pieces and taking with Water. So far I haven't had any problems. I would call your pharmacy and ask the pharmacist what your best bet is with the pills you have. Good Luck
MarLinda 0 Posted June 9, 2008 Have you consider splitting your pills? ? I know the pill crusher I bought from GNC also has a blade. Perhaps that is an options. I too have heard mixed reviews on the swallowing of pills vs crushing. I crush my Vicadin each day. I just deal with the taste. I place it onto the back of my tongue in the crushed form or mix it in a spoon. I know it taste terrible but the taste goes pretty quickly. I do agree with the other prior posters have said. It seems like they really gave you some great advise. Let me know how you make out.

shome 0 Posted June 15, 2008 after surgery what pain meds did dr give everyone? B-12 Stress B Complex C Calcium D E Iron (Ferrus Fumerate) Multi-Vitamin Zinc All have to be sugar free, & no sucralose, fructose or any other "ose". I got all but my C, D & Zinc in liquid form. However when I am done with what I have I will get the D & Zinc in liquid too!
rxdspncr 0 Posted June 15, 2008 Try this - it works for me. Take a normal bite out of a SF popsicle and let it melt in a small bowl. Add your crushed meds and continue to stir - mine dissolve pretty well or only leave little small chunks - goes down easy. That's how they gave them to me in the hospital. vkcse03 0 Posted June 15, 2008 I was told that I could swallow any size pill. I was also told that if I wanted to crush the pills then I could put them in some apple sauce.
rcoleband 0 Posted June 22, 2008 I only have one pill that I need to take and I am not taking it at the moment. It is a Water pill (diuretic). I am not sure if I am geting enough fluids to take it. I will wait until after my post op visit on Tuesday. The Dr. also prescribed me Zantac and I cut those into three strips and take them with warm tea. It seems to be ok. But 16 is a lot of pills to get down. I hope you figure out a solution.
YoungNy 1 Posted June 22, 2008 Why can't you just take them normally? I've swallowed all my pills since surgery, even the big ones, starting with the vicodin in the hospital. I bought a pill crusher before surgery, but I never used it. I didn't need to. Try just drinking them with Water.< /p>
JamieNP 20 Posted June 23, 2008 Ok, I am a nurse so I can give you a little advice on what I do for patients. You can get a pill crusher from any pharmacy (although a hammer and a baggy work great). Mix it with a little liquid (something with a taste, like juice). At this stage with that many pills, you may want to take them at different times of the day. Anything that is "enteric coated" or extended release needs to be changed and should not be crushed. You can call your pharmacist and they should be able to help you. greythope 0 Posted June 24, 2008 I take three scrips daily plus the occasional pain pill. This is how I do it. The one that is extended release I take first thing with plenty of Water. The other two I break up into smaller pieces and take through the day. I have to admit though that sometimes I just throw two tylenol down and swallow. Liquid tylenol is so expensive it's a real rip so I am just taking my chances. The medicine that almost literally saved my life after very bad PPD is extended release. After getting no where with my pharmacist and the manufacturer the doc told me I could try it four days post op. When I pushed further I was told to 'go ahead and try it. If you throw it up you know you can tolerate it.' It was fine.
