My wife is scheduled for 7AM tomorrow morning. WE are both very nervous and anxious. We know this is a good thing for her but still a little scared.

Any suggestions on what a husband can do when my wife comes home? She is expected to stay one night in the hospital (sounds different than most I have read here) I want to do everything I can to make this the best experience it can be for her. We have been married 30 years and she has fought weight problems for 28 of them. I cant wait for her to feel good again and want to be more active.

Wow Dustydog,

what a great husband you are!! I spent the night too and didn't get that much sleep there, not sure why but I didn't. It was my choice to spend the night and I made it because I wanted to be sure there weren't any comps as I've gone through many outpatient surgeries prior.

I would have done better just going home to my own bed! Just make sure that she knows she can count on you to take care of the things that she normally did around the house and she doesn't have to worry about it while she's recuperating.

I don't remember being in that much pain when it came to the incisions per se it was mainly gas pains in my stomach area and the walking I did helped with that. She should be able to tell you what she needs and you sound like you're a great husband and will do well anyway! Maybe other lap banders who had surgery recently could come up with better ideas as it's been a while for me but I wish you both luck tomorrow and I'm sure she'll do fine, take care, brandyII:smile:

Hi, your wife is very lucky, you sound like a great husband! I wish my husband was as supportive as you. Your wife will definitely need some help around the house. I had my surgery on May 22, and I am not supposed to vaccum or do laundry for 4 weeks. But I ended up having to do it today (only 2 weeks post op) because my husband refuses to do it and I can't look at nasty floors for 2 more weeks. Just keep in mind that she may be grumpy the first few days. The first week was pretty rough for me. Good luck, and I'm sure she will be fine.

She sounds like she's in great hands!

One of the things that my husband wasn't expecting was my mood swings....even worse than normal.... :)

I think a lot of it was from the anesthetic and maybe my hormones being whacked out, but a lot of it was just plain mourning my friend food......I'm fine now, but the first month was a roller coaster ride!

Good luck to the both of you!

What a great hubby you are. I would say from personal experience, make helping her any way you can for the first week or so your first, second, and third priority.

When I had my surgery, my DH roomed in with me and every time I so much as winced, he was right there trying to help. Walked with me, helped me dress, and even helped change my tampon TMI I know. When I got home, he made my Protein shakes and broth and helped me up and down the stairs.

Best of luck to your wife with her surgery!!

23_32_9.gifWhat a great husband, so far you are doing the right thing by caring. I spent the night at the hospital, was up a few times walking, I am now about 6weeks post-op and lost 16 lbs, and have more energy then I thought I would. I can only imagine what kind of endergy I have when I loose it all. My husband sat with me till about 9pm and was back to pick me up at 8am. We have been married for 26 years and he just knows when to help and when not to. You will both be fine. The first few days are slow going, just make sure you have some gas-ex for her. The gas is the worst part of it all.

Good luck and I will say some prayer for you both.15_3_36.gif

Dustydog,

Just make sure you get some sleep tomorrow night when you're home! I remember the night before surgery I couldn't sleep and like you all had to get up early for the first surgery of the day but I got to sleep during the surgery. It really was the easiest surgery I've been through and I've had my share, take care to both of you brandyII.

My daughter just had gastric bypass surgery less than two weeks ago, had a private room and I would have spent the night but found it wasn't really necessary for her and she didn't want me to. It's better for you to get a good night sleep so you can take care of her when she comes home the next day jmo, brandyII.

My best suggestion?

Spend that first night in the hospital room with her !

She's gonna have needs and requests, and the hospital will be way understaffed at nite.

My prayers are with the OR team taking care of your wife later today. Lord, guide the team and keep your arms around everyone in the OR today. Also, Lord, grant them both peace in the morning. Give them a calm like they've never felt before, let them feel your presence. In Jesus Name, Amen.

My husband sat with me on the bed while I slept at home, got me my Water, rubbed my back, helped me up, kissed me told me how much he loved me, you'll know what to do.

I was banded on Friday June 6th at 8 am. It was a really great experience for me. I've had some gas, but expecting that, so I've used a lot of gas x strips, walk, walk, walk, and my Dr. gave me prevasid which I think in working well. The most pain I've had is with the port site. I pinched and stings when I try to sit up so my hubby has be putting his hands behind my shoulders and lifting me up which has been a great help.

God Bless you guys, please let us know how your wife is doing tomorrow or Tuesday if you can.

Don't worry. I came home alone to my apartment. I did spend one night at the hospital. She will be fine. I am sure that the doc and the dietition will visit the room. Keep babyfood on hand or sugar free popsicles or Jello on hand. My doc advainced me to pureed on the 3rd day. Water is the key. Everything will be ok. Just be there for your wife. I did it on my own. Don't bring any hamburgers or food into the house. Damn that was mine problem. The smell of food can drive her nuts. Eat out, but just say you are running arronds. Sorry for the mis-spelled words.

Don't believe a word he says--he is a Pod Person!!!

Just kidding, DustyDog you sound like a wonderful man and I must admit I'm a teensy bit jealous....:tongue2:

I have to stay overnight also which his freaking me out because I've never spent the night in the hospital as a patient before. I'm sure my husband of 32 years will be supportive also, but he's not very intuitive when it comes to knowing what I'll need. So I've actually asked him NOT to hang around all day...I suggested he come in the evening when I'll be walking so he can help me get outta bed!

7_5_142.gifcongrats to those that are having surgery today. Thoughts and prayers are with you today.. Dusty.....do you have a brother? :tongue2: Anyway you will do fine. I pray your wife has an easy recovery time. Make sure she does'nt try to lift anything over 5 lbs...or what ever weight limit the dr. puts on her. Follow the dr.s instructions to a t.. follow the post-op diet to a t. Yes it is hard for someone who just got banded to smell foods...but you can't starve. Read the food thread on here because it has creative recipes for all stages of recovery. Good luck to ya'lls journey

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
