Recovery Time - work and motorcycling

Recommended Posts

1st, I just called my surgeon's office and they did the 1st 4 band surgeries this week (with the proctor). All successful (or would they tell me otherwise).. Since they don't have alot of experience, I am really counting on this board.

Can everyone tell me how long before they returned to work?

And for those others who ride motorcycle, how long before you could ride? I am not much of a pub jumper (bar hopper) but like to go somewhere. I don't have any 500+ mile days planned for the 1st month but probably a few 250-300 mile days. Is that going to be too much?

My doctor told me I could ride my Harley in two weeks. I didn't quite feel good enough at two weeks, but I rode shortly after that and it didn't bother me at all. I did ride behind my DH at two weeks though.

My doc told me to ride my Harley home from the hospital. Then again he encouraged poll dancing. I'm thinking he was joking?

I was back in classes a week after my surgery. I was still a bit tired after a full day, but I had other stuff going on too, non-band related.

I was riding horses two weeks after my surgery. And a bike is much easier... for one thing, you don't have to clean a bike's feet before you can ride it! I wouldn't want to pick up either one though... That would be the biggest concern as far as I'm concerned. (of course, horses are self righting. :) )

As far as going back to work, retunring to work I think depends on the type of job you have.

I run a restraunt, on my feet all day, and around food all day long so I opted to take an extra week off even though I felt great I did not know how I would handle being around food all day long while still on the liquid phase , it was more of a mental thing for me then physical.

I think I am not the norm... but....

I had the surgery on Wed and was back to work at a desk job by Monday.

As for my bike (crotch rocket style, sorry hate harleys), I tried at the 2 week mark but leaning over and the vibration gave me cramps. I tried at the 5 week mark and it was fine to ride but only for a trip to the video store and back. I couldn't imagine going a long haul but then again I don't ride long anyways, I am more of the "hopper".

It shouldn't be a problem in a few weeks. Not sure about the long distance.

When I was getting my band though, I met a young girl and her father, who were talking about how her godfather ripped some stitches using a jackhammer. Apparently the vibrations werent helping things.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
