any tips for airline seats

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I'm off to Bali in July and I am absolutely dreading the flight to and fro. It's only about 5 hours but it is so uncomfortable. I was hoping to have lost more weight before I went, but my first fill hasn't had much effect, and I don't have another until the end of May.

I have an aisle seat, so that helps a bit, but the tray won't go down and the belt won't fit. I hate the idea of asking for more seatbelt. oh,cringe cringe.

I'm 320 pds.

Anyone have any tips?

Thanks,

Rachel.

Rachel - Ask the attendent before you sit down for a seatbelt extension, they will give it to you descretely. Eat before you get on the plane and you won't have to worry about putting your tray down. You can always hold a drink it you need to get one.

Don't worry so much about it, and just enjoy yourself, it isn't worth all the worry and pain you put yourself through!

Rachel,

You still have several months before you go. Do you think that you might be able to lose 20 or 30 pounds? It will make a difference and it could be a goal that definitely can be achieved. It might make the difference between needing an extender or not depending on your weight distribution. ONe of the things that made me feel better before a flight was to call the airlines, explain the problem and let them let you get on a similar plane to see how things fit before you go. I did this one time before I went to NY a few years ago. I was glad I did because the problem wasnt as big as I had made it in my mind to be. I used to have panic attacks before every flight, so I stopped flying for quite some time. Also, I would take a happy pill before getting on the plane. If you are feeling good or very sleepy, it would bother you as much. I would also ask for the extender before you get on the plane so you dont have to ask when you get on. Sorry I cant come up with better ideas. I do feel your pain though because I have been there myself.

They always ask for people that need to preboard, like the elderly or women with small children. Just join that group and board before the rest of the people. They usually don't ask questions, but if they do you can tell them you are recovering from surgery. Then you'll have plenty of privacy and you can ask for the extension privately. You could even tell them you need an extension because of stitches or something.

Are you a frequent flyer on that airline? Can you upgrade your seat? Some airlines have a business class where the seats are wider and 1st class always is. There also may be the opportunity to upgrade your seat for a fee. I know there are various rates but I would ask. I would also check if I could join some club/frequent flyer/other group they have that may provide a free 1time upgrade.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
