Hi my name is Nikki and I'm new here. I've been lurking since February when my primary care doc recomended Lap Band to me. I was shocked at first, didn't think I was even close to being a canidate for surgery for my weight, but I am! I have my first appointment with the surgeon today. I'm extremly nervous, but excited at the same time. I have my whole family and future husband's support, but I'm just very nervous. I'm not sure what to expect for the first meeting. I'm going to be seeing Dr. Roye through Rhode Island Hospital. Right now my weight is at 246, and I'm 5'4", so totally looking to get down to at least 160, I would be extremly happy with that. I miss being able to play soccer and softball, and I know I need to loose weight before we even start to think about having children. Any tips for the first appointment? What to expect?

Just be positive. This isn't a quick fix, it takes effort and changes, but you can do it. I would recommend this procedure--it has been the best thing I have ever done for my health. Good Luck!

congrats on your first step! i'm also 5'4. i was banded two years ago(on july 10) well, when i first was banded i lost 24pds and then had a big baby surprise. i was very excited (he's my third) so i had to be unfilled, during my pregnancy i gained weight ( i always do, lots) when my baby was 4 weeks old went in for my fill i weighed 221 and im now down to 161. Evan is now 11 months old so it took me 10 months to lose 60 pds. still want to loose about 30 more pounds. and its been slow, but well very well worth it!! so long story short, had band, lost weight had baby, gained weight, got filled, lost more weight!!

good luck to you!

Nikko,

Hi, I am being banded by Dr Roye on June 17th. You will love him. You won't meet him on the first appt. You will meet with his np Kathleen. She goes over everything with you. They won't do anything, and I mean anything, no appt will be set with specialists until they have authorization from your insurance, so you might want to call your ins to make sure they cover it. Then they will send you info on which appts you will need a few will be set for you. when all the pre testing is done, then you set up an appt and meet Dr Roye. What I found very helpful, was I went to the seminar put on by Dr Pohle at Roger Williams Hosp. it is held 1x a month but he goes over everything, at the end you can ask any questions you want. there were very little questions because he covered everyything. Orginally I was going to go with Dr Phole, but I don't like Roger Williams. Sorry this is long. If you have any questions please feel free to email me or pm me.

Thanks for the welcome!

Kim...that is so great to hear someone else going to Dr. Roye! I'm going to have a ton of questions for you! I did have my appointment today, it went well. They are suposed to be contacting Blue Cross tomorow, and she said we will hopefully hear back in a few days to a week. She said she's pretty sure I'll be covered just fine, since I have some issues due to my weight. I definatly don't like driving to RIH though, I got lost, went into the wrong parking garage, and drove around for 10 minutes waiting to find a spot! Auuh I hate driving in Providence! I did get the small ammount of info that she gave me today, which most of it I already knew. I did have one question, what the heck is the phsych evaluation for? What do they do? And also, what is the pre-op diet like for him? Thanks!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
