Does your stomach shrink over time?

Recommended Posts

Okay, been wondering this for awhile.

I know that a persons stomach (a muscle as well as an organ) shrinks during dieting which causes less food intake to feel full. Then when you stop dieting you slowly expand your stomach again.

SOOOOOOO, my question is to all the veteran bandsters (1 year after banding?) do you feel as if your stomach has "shrunk" naturally and that if someone removed your band completely you would not eat as much as you did when you were at your heaviest? Hence, needing less food to satisfy naturally?

In my experience, yes it certainly does.... BUT like any muscle, once you start excersising it again, grows. After my second surgery, and since my band had slipped and I had been eating almost nothing solid for 3 months by then, I was never hungry, so after the liquid and mushy stages, I really believed I was in control of how much I ate.... and I was, up to xmas that is, when I went back into binge mode and ate everything in sight, but couldnt manage to eat as much as I would before banding...

after that, and with regular binges (not proud, just sacrastic), I ended up eating as much, if not more than before banding, and ran for fills....

This little excersise taught me that unfortunately, I am what I am.....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
