Very weird symptoms - mental problems

Recommended Posts

I have not been getting nutrition like I am supposed to and not eating much. I am going to start right now.

I was having a lot of weird problems. I went to the ER and found out my potassium is low. Which I am getting now. Which did have symptoms similar to what I am feeling now, such as confusion.

I feel really weird saying this, but I feel like I am almost losing my mind. I am not crazy and this has never happened before in my life.

I can't sleep. I find when I type stuff, I read it over, and I forget words in a sentence. I am using words that are not even close to the words that should be there.

It's a lot of stuff like that.

I just don't feel right all around, but it's hard to explain. It's getting so bad that I don't think I can drive myself to any doctor to find out what's wrong.

I suppose I should get my potassium checked again. But has anyone had low potassium? Or has anything like this happened to anybody?

I would suggest urgently going to see your doctor for a checkup especially as you say you haven't been eating well. If you feel you are not able to drive ask a friend or family member if they can drive you there.

Hate that! The 3 things people don't tell you before losing weight are:

Your hair will fall out

Your gall bladder will go out of order

You will get lethargic/confused/light headed/hostile/irritable, etc.

I found out the hard way on all accounts.

But just know this isn't band related...it's weightloss.

Had this happen to me back when I was on Atkins. A nurse told me that the only type of fuel the brain can utilize is CARBOHYDRATES, not Proteins. So, anyone wanting to lose weight should ensure they have the time, actually dedicate a period of time, to do this. Their job can suffer, their relationships can suffer. But it is only for a time.

Hang in there! It's much much better from this side of the fence.

Precisely why my surgeon does NOT support a high protien, no carb diet. Well balanced is much better for overall health. There are good carbs and bad carbs. the secret is knowing which are which and sticking to it. I eat carbs. I've lost weight just fine.

I know that all those things ~can~ happen when you lose weight, but they don't necessarily HAVE to. I lost 100 lbs. three times over the years (yeah, I know, you'd think at least one of those times I would have kept it off) and I never had any of those symptoms. I lost the first time on Jenny Craig, the 2nd time on a low fat diet, and the 3rd time on Atkins -- very low carb. Kept all my hair, never had any negative symptoms, loss of memory, change in personality, job problems, etc. Can't speak about the gallbladder though because I had mine removed years ago (at a time when I was not dieting and was pretty heavy).

Maybe I'm just lucky -- I'm sure hoping I don't have any issues this time around either!

I'd still talk to my doctor about the issues you're experiencing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
