Location Unimportant, Personality is Key, Male?

Recommended Posts

I was banded May 15, 2008 at 299lbs. My goal is 140, so I have a ways to go.

About me:

  • 33 years old (on Friday!)
  • Divorced (and happy about it, thanks!)
  • Female
  • A full time student
  • A full time paralegal
  • Living with a roommate (Army guy, healthy, great friend and supporter)
  • A little OCD, a lot Type A, and completely motivated
  • I cuss like a sailor
  • I love to travel
  • I live on my BlackBerry (mentor will have to be someone OK with communicating via phone, text, email, chat, and boards**)

First, a nod to VegasGrace. FABULOUS post! I would love to talk to you sometime! That said, I am just this side of needing things like Protein powders for my morning smoothie, a gym membership to remind me that I need to (a) socialize and ( get my ass moving since I am paying for it. I know that's not your gig, but please know that I am applauding your posts. =)

I need tough love, and prefer it over most "touchy-feely" crap... but I need empathy, too. My mentor will need to be honest with me, but I don't want a drill sargeant. My mentor will need to have their own life outside of these boards and, believe it or not, outside the band. It's a tool, it shouldn't consume you (or me, for that matter). I want a mentor who will be proactive in mentoring, sharing their experience, but not someone who will throw in the towel because I did something my way.

I don't do the pity thing, I am not second-guessing this decision. I am here, I did it, and I want to move forward.

One of my favorite sayings: It is what it is. You deal with it, whatever it is, and you live your life.

As the title says, I would prefer a guy. It's not a deal breaker, but I am guy-friend type of gal. Less drama, more honesty, and usually to-the-point.

If you have questions, let me know.

Thanks!

** Not necessarily all at once or one over the other, but we both have lives and each medium has its own advantages.

Hi Felicia. After reading your post, it seems like we are both looking for the same type of support. BTW, Happy Birthday tomorrow!! I think we could be a great help and support to each other. I am 48, married with 3 sons and usuallyt work from home, but always have motorola PDA with me to handle text messaging and emails.

I need a no nonsense approach to this journey and I am often my toughest critic. This has its disadvantages as I often don't give myself credit for successes, but rather dwell on what else I need to do.

Let me know if you are interested in supporting each other.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
