Recommended Posts

Okay so I am terrible about actually remebering to ask the doc things so I am trying to make a list of questions that I should ask him at my pre-op appointment on friday. So what did you ask or what do you wish you asked? thank you all!

ONe thing to ask is what is the docs post FILL Diet .

What instructions does he have for each fill ? Some docs require liquids only 24 hours before a fill , some 6 hours before a fill. Some docs require liquids 24 hours AFTER a fill. So ask those questions .

Here is a good section to look at

Lap-Band Surgery Frequently Asked Questions - Lap Band Surgery and Lap Band Discussion Forum

Also what is the post op diet .

What is his fill "schedule " how far out do they schedule for fills and unfills ?

Is someone on call in case of an emergency ?

What happens if the doc is out of town ( Espieically if your doc is in a one practice office )

That's all i can think of right now But others im sure will chime in

Here are some of the questions I asked (in no particular order of importance):

1. Did he have his patients stay overnight? (I wanted that security)

2. Did he do a barium swallow before releasing his patients?

3. What type of band did he use and why?

4. Who was doing the anesthesia and when I could meet that person.

5. Did he use staples, sututres, or glue for his wound closures?

6. How many incisions and where?

7. How frequent were followup visits and when did he consider do0ing the first fill?

8. How accessible was he if I got into problems?

9. Did he do his own fills?

10. What was his pain management philosophy?

11. What was his rate of infection - specifically in his practice?

12. What was his complication rate - specifically in his practice for band slippage and erosion?

13. Did he have a comprehensive guideline for what to eat pre-op and through the post op recovery stages? (surprising how some people don't get that guidance).

14. How many lap bands has he done (at least 300)?

15. What are his credentials? Is he Board Certified in Surgery and what Bariatric surgery certifications does he hold?

I think there may have been more, but this is what I recall. Good Luck to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
