Why pre op evaluations did you have to do?

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering because I only have to have 3 little things for my pre evaluation and Im already getting surgery so really its just a precaution, I only had to have an ekg, see the endocrine part at my hospital and do a excercise test (which I have to do every 4 months anyway because I have a lung condition.)

I know others have to go through heaps of other stuff and I was wondering what those were? And if you really thought that some of them were necessary?

I had to have psych, an all day behavior modification seminar, nutrition, exercise, and then the day before surgery I will have blood work-up not sure what else then but nothing much. No x-rays, no endoscopy, no EKG I don't know if that is because I am lucky and have no co-morbidities or what.

I'm having an EKG cause my nurse heard an irregular heartbeat, I am having an endoscopy cause everyone should lets them know what your stomach looks like if you have ulcers etc.

The three things i had to do were EKG, Chest Xray, and CBC w/differential blood test. Didn't have to do the Endoscopy or other tests because I'm 26 w/no comorbidities.

Best wishes to you with your tests!

I guess it depends on if you have health problems before, I would have thought that I would have more evaluations but I don't which is kinda strange, I mean yeah I have to have the blood work done as well but everyone has that done before surgery just to see stuff

Wow it's amazing the difference in what you have to do presurgical.

I had to meet with a dietician, and exercise therapist and a psychotherapist. Then I had to have an upper GI, a bunch of labwork and an EKG. I would have had to have a sleep study except I've already been diagnosed with sleep apnea. I also would have had to have an endoscopy except I had one about a year ago due to GERD.

I already had medically supervised weightloss from when I was in the Air Force so when I went to my PCP I brought those records, then she refurred me for surgery. Then the surgeon just needed me to do the phyce eval. I had an education day but that was mostly telling me how to eat after I have surgery. No EKG, no blood work, no endoscope.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
