Wishful thinking - eating out

Recommended Posts

Yes, I am still on liquids BUT dreaming of real food. I am wondering if anyone orders off the kid menu? I have mixed feelings about trying it. My doctor even gave me this credit card type explanation to present explaining we can't eat much. Anyone willing to share how they eat out? I know some places probably would frown on it and I don't know if I want to reveal that much info...but it seems a waste.

Thanks

My friend had gastric bypass and had a card but would forget to show it. She usually just took a few bites of her husband's meal when eating out. Now that she's at goal and can eat more she orders her own meal.

I use the Restaurant Card all the time. It lets me order off the senior menu or the child's menu. It's great! If I go out to eat and order off the regular menu, I usually get 3 meals out of it.

If you're on liquids, you can go to a Chinese restaurant and order egg flower Soup. I did that a lot. It made me feel less deprived. It was on my list of foods I could have.

I'm still on mushies, mind you, but I've been ordering a side or a Soup. Still can't eat it all, obviously, but at least I don't feel like I waste a whole meal. I also can share with my 5 yr. old, who never eats his whole meal. I just get something for him that works for me too.

When I go out to eat, I automatically just cut my meal in half. I cut my sandwich in half & then quarter half of it, and then if it's fries or fruit or something like that, I split that up. Then I just ask for a take out box so I can take it home. That way I get two or three meals out of it at least

Nesser, does that mean you can eat bread? After hearing that we can't eat bread after lapband, I've read of several people eating sandwiches so I'm just curious.

My doctor didn't give me a card that allows me to order off the children's menu in a restaurant - I'll have to ask them about that.

I just got off mushies on Friday so I've been slowly adding "normal" food to my menu. I never got my "last supper" before surgery so I'm toying with the idea of going out to eat this weekend before I get my first fill next week. I think I do have some mild restriction and I have been making very healthy choices and eating small portions, so I'm doing very well.... but maybe a very modified "last supper" this weekend is in the works. Funny though, I already have lost interest in over-doing it so I am not concerned that I'll suffer a diet setback if I do choose to go out!

I have ordered off the children's menu, but the choices are usually less nutritious than the senior menu. I usually try to talk my husband into ordering something I can eat and then eating part of his. If all else fails, most restaurants have a side of cottage cheese and some fruit. Last night we went out for Chinese and my husband and children each ordered an entree and I nibbled off of their plates.

The worst problem I have in eating out is convincing the server that I really don't want anything to drink. I also try to tip for two Entrees if I am eating off my husband's plate because it is just as much work for the server to bring me an extra plate, napkins, etc.

I have eaten at a cafeteria and had Talipia(grilled), black eyed peas, and red Beans. I had to mash them up. I've also eaten eggs and grits but I ate too fast and there was a lump in my throat. I am still on mushy and have just started my third week after surgery. I supplement with Low Carb Slimfast. I have really gotten hungry but one time.

How about splitting meals? Asking for a lunch portion? Just eating what you want and taking the rest home for lunch the next day or someone else's lunch if there's no way your going to finish it?

I know at Mimi's they have a "small bites" section. I've ordered off of that and it's reasonable for an off liquid diet splurge*. I think it'd still be too much post band, but again no one says you have to finish any meal at the table.

Also, I'm sure if you ordered off the kids menu they'd accept the explaination, but...then a lot of the things on the kids menu I wouldnt eat. I'm sorry, if I'm going to eat a burger I want lettuce and mayo and all that things that are supposed to go on burgers.

Anyway, my boyfriend and I have been practicing. We split meals since most of them are too big for one person anyway. (If he wants more he can order an appetizer).

Oh and ordering off the appetizer section isn't a bad idea either.

My doctor told me that I could have bread as long as it's toasted. So if I get something like a hamburger or that type of a sandwich, I make sure it's toasted. I did try a chunk of a regular type sandwich today, just to try it, and I found that while it didn't get stuck or anything, it did make my stomach feel kinda icky.

I always tell the waitress that I want Water with no ice. I am able to drink right up until the food comes. I am single and I eat out all the time.

There are so many things that are banster friendly. A lot of times I will ask for extra veggies instead of potato. Unfortunately, I can eat bread. I usually choose not to, but sometimes that bread basket calls my name. I can actually eat anything I want to, as long as I am very careful with the size of my bites and chewing until there is nothing left to chew.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
