I'm glad you are as happy with Dr. Carcamo as I am. You are so close to getting your date. I know how excited and anxious you must be.

I hit my halfway mark today. 65 lbs lost, 65 lbs to go.

Hi everyone - San Antonio here - went to the free seminar a couple of weeks ago on Stone Oak - thinking of lap band but haven't fully decided yet. Seems to be a lot of complications such as band slippage, infections etc. It concerns me. I envy those of you that have done it and are doing great. That is wonderful!

If you'll check the statistics band slippage/erosion rates are VERY low, 1-5% over the life of the band. That's NOTHING. Even if it happens, often it can be fixed! Not to push the band, of course, if it's right for you you'll know. But other WLS and staying FAT both carry higher percentages of risk than that small rate.

You should go to the seminar my doctor runs at Northeast Baptist. He's really informative and realistic.

I've lost 55 lbs. Got another 50 or so to go. This last band fill seems to be working very well. No hunger between meals and I am losing again. Good luck.

Hello fellow SAtowners! I have been looking for a local thread and finally found one. I got my band Monday Jan. 12th with Dr. Stegemann. I feel ok... how was everyone's recovery process?

Hello! I am from just up the road in Kerrville... just found this thread. I was banded April 25, 2008 by Dr. Gonzales at True Results.

It's nice to "meet" some other people who are close by!

Hola from San Antonio as well... I just found this thread... I'm having to wait for my sixth month supervised diet thingee, but it's fine because I'm so lucky that my insurance covers 100% and my total costs will be $500... I'm having it done by Dr Gonzales at True Results and couldn't be happier. He did my gallbladder removal a few years ago so I feel comfortable with him.

I started a group for San Antonio bandsters, check out my profile to see the link... just want to 'meet' some locals who have gone through or will be going through this life-changing experience...

Jenny

When was the last time you went for a fill? Are you exercising? Getting enough Protein? How much are you eating at each meal? Snacking?

Sorry for the ambush! Just trying to get a handle on what you are doing! I had my surgery almost a year ago (April 25, 2008) and I've lost almost 80 pounds, but continuing to lose. I am sure that the amount of weight we have to lose plays a factor, but I'm surprised you haven't lost anything since January. I can eat only very little at each meal. Mornings nothing... just a coffee or something. I lose about a pound a week for the most part. I'm 18 pounds from goal, but I only had 96 to lose to begin with.

Hang in there. Maybe see your dietician? Maybe they can help.

I am going to be moving to the SA in the next couple of weeks to work on a major construction project at the VA Hosp. Complex. I am looking for a good area to live in and also wondering if there is a support group and if not do people meet up. I am 2 years out.

Thanks

Chris

Congratulations on your weight lose. There are great support groups in SA - I am considering the lap band, have had everything done but set the date. San Antonio is a great place to live - we live outisde of SA in Schertz - taxes aren't as high and it is a great place to live. Housing is very affordable and it is a great place. :wink2:

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
