Calling all you pre-op diet specialists!

Hi there!

I'm on the final couint down. I'm getting banded on June 4th.

I'm a little confused about something and wanted some reassurance: I've been low-carbing for about a month (with a couple of off days) and I found I was eatting anywhere from 1000 to 1600 calories those first few weeks.

At first I was supposed to switch to "liquids" on the 28th. The first day wasn't too bad, but by the second I was feeling pretty hungry. I was getting anywhere from 400-600 calories. I started to feel pretty low on the energy scale!

So I mentioned this to my case manager when I saw her for the pre-op testing and asked if I could have a bit of solid Protein. She said I was doing great with my weight loss and that one "sensible meal" was fine.

So for the past two days I've added in a bit of solid Proteins and felt much better. I'll have a pouch of tuna, or a chicken breast or a chicken patty. I've kept it low carb and I'm getting in around 600-700 calories a day.

I know I'll switch to Clear Liquids only on the 2 last days.

My question is, do you think I'm twarting my goal of shrinking my liver down with what I'm eating?

For those of you who want to see exactly what I've eaten, I'm Hunzi at www.TheDailyPlate.com I think you can view my food diary. I've tracked every morsel!

I just want to be sure I'm doing everything right so I can go into this surgery as healthy and prepared as possible!

Thanks!

Always ;-)

I was on a restricted Atkin's style diet, which included low fat meats, poultry, and fish. What you are doing would have been fine with my Dr.

Hunzi, When I was on my pre-op diet to shrink my liver, I would eat one of those tuna pouches every day also. It takes the hunger away and I did o.k. You sound like you are doing great. I also had the Protein Drinks to keep me from being so hungry. Good luck.

No, from what you've said here, it sounds like you're doing great. Low-and no-carb foods are fine when you're trying to shrink your liver. Your liver basically feeds off carbs, so make sure you stay away from those and you'll be doing good.

I don't mean to seem like I'm tooting my own post-horn, but I wrote a post on why the low-carbs diet works for liver shrinkage and how it affects you. Take a look at the top section or two and it will give you the basics on how it works, and you'll probably feel a little better knowing that what you're doing is just fine!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
