I heard no corn or pop corn ever???

I have benn banded since August, 2007. About 5 months after surgery I could eat about anything. So I decided I would eat some popcorn. Huge mistake, it got stuck requiring me to go to the hospital to take out my fill. I was sick throwing up for about 7 hours before I decided I had enough. Once the fill was out you could fill it go down immediately and all the pressure was gone and I was fine. It was wierd, but I will never do popcorn again.

I use the "I can't believe it's not butter" spray on my corn on the cob----a half a piece is plenty, but yuuuuumy!!!!

And I love the little mini bags of microwave popcorn.

I'm with Jack, I eat a lot less of everything, but have not found anything that is totally off limits.

Very early on with my band I ate 2 bites--way too big, and way too fast of a glazed donut---OMG I hurt so bad---I have put them on my never again list-------but that's it, so far it is a short list after 2+ years!!

Of course if your Dr. doesn't allow those things, discuss it with them-----not us!!!

Actually, popcorn goes down just find for me. But, any kind of other corn I simply cannot eat. It gets stuck every time, so I guess that is one of my off limit foods.

Whats the best way to get stuck food to go down? Somebody said drink warm pineapple juice or maybe it was grapefruit-- anyway I got approved today for my surgery. I have to meet with the dietician Thursday and get my surgery date. The doctor just told me again that he hopes he can do it thru all the scar tissue. So keep your fingers crossed for me.:confused2:

I don't have any problems eating popcorn or corn. I don't eat much or very often, but I like them. I don't eat potatoes very often. If baked, then the skin is fine. Boiled potatoes - I don't eat the skin anymore.

Be aware that your tastes will change after being banded for awhile. Some of the foods that you can't imagine living without, you just won't care about anymore.

And to be thin, you eat like a thin person -- which means not eating a lot of foods that are primarily a vehicle for ingesting butter. :(

Jack, I totally agree, My Dr from the beginning said the goal is to be able to eat normally just in smaller portions (much smaller), makeing better choices. He wants us to enjoy our meals and our lives, not feel like we are on some horrible diet or starving or being deprived. And he made me feel like this band was the way to do it successfully.

I have only been banded for 2 months, and I only have 1 food that doesnt agree with me after the first time, I gave it a rest and said ok I will find another way to try it and that worked.

I can eat anything else. I have had a handful of popcorn, didn't have a taste for it though, had fresh corn on cob the other night. Have had potatoes thinly sliced w/skin, no problem, whole wheat bread, etc. I have yet to get sick, throw up. No sliming, PBing, and I am steadily losing. I watch my portions and my intake. It can be done I believe. I no longer care for certain foods or Condiments and that is fine. That is actually fantastic. I also make sure I keep up with my exercising.

I have had several newly banded or to be banded who are going to my doctor email me and ask for suggestions to help in the early months because they see so much about people throwing up or too tight or all the stuff they can't eat and then see my post on other sites or meet me at group meetings and hear how I am doing and what is working for me so they want to know more to have a positve experience.

I really follow my Dr's guidelines and reread when I need to and ask guestions whenever I go and take the bad information I feel I pick up on the way and ask him about it and learn from it also.

So far I feel successful. I am new to this but I believe you have to have a positve attitude because when the rough bumps do hit and I am sure they will, your attitude is at least half the game if not more.

yaheard,, the question you really want to ask isn't " Is it true, I really can't ever have pop corn, or potatoe skins etc anymore" but is " do I really need or want pop corn, ice cream, potatoe skins etc " and if the answer is yes,, then remember everything in moderation which for us is very very moderate, and at the right time depending on when you were banded and cautously the first time you try.

That would be my advice. When you find those foods you can eat that you thought you couldn't and you love, and you know could be a problem for you remember why you did this and your goal, and moderation. OK Good luck

2) what are their credentials?

3) why would it be so?

The reality of long term Bandster lifestyle, in my experience at least, actually finds *VERY LITTLE* that are 'absolute NO-NOs' in the sense of 'can not eat it'.

What I am finding, is many of my old favorites, no longer have any interest.

I have eaten popcorn, with no difficulty. It's just not that good. Leave off the salt, leave off the oily butter-flavored calorie enhanced goo, what is there? Something much like styrofoam peanuts.

re: corn or corn on the cob. A favorite. I just don't eat much of it. And if you are one that slathers butter all over it....as I used to....no offense intended....the addiction to butter flavor is what justifies gobbling down the corn.

The best corn on the cob I've ever had, was totally fresh-30 seconds out of the garden, 30 seconds in the hot Water, and straight into my mouth....no salt, no butter...and it WAS good.

re: potato skins. A personal favorite. Forget the deep fried, battered, saucy-slathered enhanced variety. You've just eaten about 600 calories and you are not even into the appetizers yet!

Leave the skin ON the baked spud (a noble food IMHO) and slice it thinly as you eat it. Maybe a little Mrs. Dash.

Seems too simple to a lot of folks. 1/4 of a regular spud is plenty, not the 2# plus all the white/yellow/pink/etc colored stuff we all spent decades heaping on the plate.

Or better yet, try a little baked sweet potato, with just a LITTLE touch of butter...

Too many 'CAN'T EAT' messages clutter up the reality.

How MUCH we eat is far more significant.

I just had corn with my dinner, have corn few times a week never had problems I have been banded since sep 2007. popcorn I havent tried but even before banding tended to choke on it so will give it a miss now. Potatoe skin got a little stuck once but i was not sick, but must admit the potatoe and the dry roasted skin were both tough, havent tried the potatoe skin again but the inside of the potatoe ohhh yummy.

I can eat corn on the cob and popcorn without problem. Rarely do, though. Luckily I stopped putting butter on my corn many years ago, so I'm used to the taste--and that means I only eat corn at the peak of the season, yuummm! As for popcorn, I only eat it about once a year anyway. If I'm going to have it, I have the real thing, but share the smallest size with someone else and eat as little as I feel satisfied with. I also got used to going to movies without food years ago, so that isn't hard either. But neither of these things has ever gotten stuck before. They just aren't that great nutritionally so they aren't regular parts of my diet.

I am just not as well behaved in my diet as Gwen---I should be, but I'm not!!

I love the movies, and I love the popcorn! I do KNOW without a doubt I don't eat anywhere near the quantity I used to.....but still love the popcorn/movie combo, and we use it as a treat to ourselves!

With the "fake" butter I get the taste I think I need without the added calories, and while I am sure it is not the greatest thing for me....it keeps me happy.

Through the years, I have learned a few things about myself, and one of them being, I do not respond well to deprivation, it is one of the things that always led me to binge. Making small changes, such as the spray on zero calorie butter spray as opposed to a cube of butter ran up and down the corn on the cob, keep me satisfied.....and I do not feel deprived. Same as the popcorn, a small will fill me up before I reach the bottom, but I HAD it, I feel like I splurged. And technically I did, but it was a splurge--done on occasion ---rather than a binge done with regularity!!

I still wish I had that personality though!!!!

Sounds like you're doing just fine--we all have our little treats. Doing what you've been doing got you to goal, so you're doing something right!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
