A question for carbonated soft drinks

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if carbonated soft drinks can cause a problem to our band? I've read in another forum that the gas they have stretches the pouch and might make the band to slip. Others say that they there's no problem. I've already drunk 2 diet cokes and had no problem, I just had a feeling of "fullness", but I'm still scared.

I'm sorry for my bad english, but I'm from Greece.

I have found that I usually dont have a problem drinking the diet cokes, but later I have a problem eating food. I usually have to throw the food back up, or Im very limited on what I can eat...up to 3-4 days AFTER I drink diet coke.

No problems here, my Dr. said I could drink any diet soft drink after 4 wks post op. So I average 1 a day now since I was banded 4/9/08. I drink alot of ice tea with splenda, and sugar free koolaid. I use alot of single koolaid cause it is so much easier to add to a cold bottle of Water and you dont get tired of the same flavor. So your doing fine, just don`t drink a whole drink after your meal. Just drink a 1/4 of it after your half hour wait. Take care.

It's nice to see someone from Greece.

My surgeon forbids us from drinking carbonated drinks once banded because he feels it stretches the band. He also asks us not to drink anything with caffeine because it can irritate the stomach and cause ulceration.

WHAT??? I hadn't read/heard anything about caffeine!!?? I knew that diet soda or carbonated drinks were discouraged...but caffeine?!? I haven't been banded yet...but this worries me! I'm a caffeine FREAK!!! It's enough to think about giving up my energy drinks (rock star, monster) due to carbonation....but coffee?? That would make me very sad!!! I suppose I'd get over it, but sad all the same!!

About a year or so after my banding trouble knocked and I foolishly opened the door. After consuming my usual amount of coffee and diet soda I began to have pain in my stomach. I let it get to the point where it began to be a constant companion. I decided to get it checked out. Diagnosis...7, yup seven, ulcers. My gastro and I agreed no more soda, no more coffee. I went cold turkey on the soda and first went to Decaf, then Roma and now teas to conquer my morning hot beverage cravings. After a few months on proton pump inhibitors (Nexium) my ulcers healed.

But guess what, I am a weak individual and went back to the pleasures of the flesh aka soda and coffee. A couple of months later, two more ulcers. Lesson learned. No carbonated beverages, no coffee or caffeinated drinks...oh and sorry ladies, chocolate also was a culprit. Sometimes you have to put your hand on the burner more than once to learn your lesson.

I can't drink coffee because it nauseates me because of the acid but was a heavy Diet Coke drinker. I quit cold turkey when I found out I wouldn't be able to have it once banded. To get off of it I drank Water and Crystal Light like crazy the first week. I haven't had any in about 10 weeks.

My doc says Carbonation is a BIG NO NO and its a huge no no as far as im concerned. He says it can stretch out your pouch and sure you might be ABLE to drink it but the issues comes from the pouch being stretched by the carbonation , your not going to know that or realize it until its too late and your pouch is already stretched. I dont and wont ever touch it again !

I was a HUGE soda drinker , were talking if i was drinking something it was a coke, I kicked it cold turkey before surgery . I drink caffiene in the form of tea ( I have to have some or i get Migraines ) But its about 1 a day . My doc says nothing about it .

Carbonation is something I wont chance !!

You realize that your putting your band in jeopardy by doing this right ?

every time you throw up your risking your band to slip !

On top of risking your pouch to be stretched by the diet coke ?

Im not trying to be rude , if your doc says cokes are ok that's fine , but if its causing you to throw up I would take a second thought about drinking them , because your risking a slipped band by throwing up ..

congrats. I can say that quitting sodas was almost as hard as quitting smoking ! it was ROUGH !

Keep up the great work . I feel a lot better after not drinking sodas its been nearly a yr and a half for me

I was told that I could never drink carbonated beverages and that I couldn't have caffeine for three months. I was a caffeine freak as well...but you will be surprised what you are capable of. I've had a couple of Decaf cups of coffee over the last couple of weeks...and my stomach has been fine. However, it's awesome to be free of one more addiction. I thought I LOVED coffee but I really just NEEDED coffee.

I posted my experience to discourage bandsters from drinking soda at all. Considering the risk, I have given up soda. But thanks for your concern Mindy.

Hi Everyone, Everything I have read about the band and what my doc says NO CARBONATED drinks, NO CAFFENINE, Period. Now think about what you wanted to accomplish when you got banded. Didn't anyone tell you its a life changing experience.?? SO CHANGE give up old bad habits and replace with new HEALTHY ones. Like drinking Water which you need to flush out the fat. Not sodas. If you want cheap really good tasting Water. Put a picture from your tap in the fridge. Let it sit overnight. All the chemical taste will be gone. I am supposed to drink 64 oz a day. I put that amount in the fridge everynight. Next morning I start drinking. If I have to go somewhere I pour some in a old water bottle. YOU can do this! All you have to do is replace the word CAN'T with CAN and just do it.

Sorry for the soap box treatment. But if your not willing to change the habits that got you to be banded... WHY DID YOU GET BANDED?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
