After all of the different weight loss attempts, I had never really heard about or even thought about lap band until I recently read an article in the Washington Post of the results of Type II diabetics. I also am hypothyroid and have recent hospitalization both thyroid and hypertension. I have been told to get my blood pressure under control and then I can get a referral. So now I am doing reasearch and reading success stories. I know that every one is unique, but I am hopeful.

Have a great day.

Welcome to the message boards Sweet Diva.

I too have hypothyroidism and hypertension along with other medical problems. I'm in the final stages of the process before I get banded. I am beyond excited because I know this tool will really help me with getting my weight issues under control and getting back my life. Two of my cousins have been banded for a few years and have done beautifully so it gives me hope. There are also many success stories here and other message boards.

You have a great day too!

Well, I have my first appointment today. A bit nervous, but hopeful. My weight is not a servere as some, but my diabetes is my killer. I'm no longer able to control it with diet, exercise, nor insulin. The results are 1 heart attack, hypertension, high glucose, high cholesterol, and been told that the odds of an early death too close.

I hope and pray this will be successful. Just not sure how long this process will take.

I have Type II Diabetes, high blood pressure and high Tryglycerides. This is what led me to WLS in addition to all the weight I needed to lose. Prior to beginning my pre-op diet, my blood sugar levels were around 295. Taking insulin, contrary to what my doctor said, would immediately make me gain weight. My blood pressure was high as were my Triglycerides (over 440). After two weeks on the pre-op diet, my blood sugar levels were around 85. My blood pressure is low/normal at 110/65. I'll find out about the triglcerides in about a month when i have my next blood test. I entered the hospital taking 8 medications and left the hospital taking only one which I hope to stop soon as I lose more weight.

True, I saw these changes from following the pre-op diet prior to surgery, but I sincerely believe, that without the band I would not be able to stick to such a strick diet regime as I currently do. As of today I have lost almost 45 pounds since the start of my pre-op diet.

Hope this helps.

The process can be a long one for some people. But during the wait you can learn all you can about the surgery! I wish you lots of luck.:(

Help me out please, what is the pre-op diet. My edocrinologist says I have to tighten up my blood sugars and bllod pressure and add some exercise before I can receive the referral, although she is supportive. I am thinking that if I do that, it would help me those things in order.

I so appreciate the support :rolleyes2:here as I am a member of many boards, I feel embraced it. Have a good day everyone.

I am on a 6 month diet for insurance. But a pre-op diet is usually when you are on high Proteins, or liquid diets before surgery to help the stomach adjust and to shrink the liver. From what I know the best way to shrink the liver is to eat low carbs.

As for you I would lower your sugar intake, and eat sensibly. Exercise if you can, you don't have to do a lot just move!!

And if you have any other questions feel free to ask, and if you aren't sure call your doctor. :P

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
