Anyone on here from Saskatchewan?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I'm from Saskatoon. Banded Jan 25,08 in Tijuana, Mexico. So far I'm down around 40+ lbs. Best thing I ever did.

I look forward to hearing about your experience.

Born and raised in Yorkton, Sask. but now live in BC. Been banded 1 years plus. Love the band and know I could not live without it.

Estevan, Saskatchewan here. Down 70lbs with 30 more to go. Was banded in '07. No regrets whatsoever ... well maybe one; that I didn't have it done 20 years ago :rolleyes2: The name Joel Sopp is very familiar. I am wondering if you are from my neck of the woods?

I am from Creighton Saskatchewan,

Because Saskatchewan does not cover lapband surgery, I went to the Maples Surgical Centre in Winnipeg and paid for it myself. Sent letters to the goverment but they just said good luck.

Had my surgery Oct 14th. Go for my first fill Nov 25th.

How was your experience and costs to go to Winnipeg?

The cost for The maples clinic is 18,375.00. This includes fills for 1 year. Of course there is gas to winnipeg and food. I am lucky I have family in Winnipeg so I stay there. Is Okay because Creighton is small so get to shop in the City a little more.

I never realized how far north Creighton is in Saskatachewan. If you ever come to Regina, let us know. By us, I mean the Saskatchewan Bariatric Surgery Support Group (SBSSG).

By the way, Janet, I am actual the President of the SBSSG. Our website is www.sbssg.ca and we are looking to create Support Groups all over the Province. Perhaps you'll consider attending one of our Support Group Meetings. We are currently running one monthly meeting in Regina, but soon hope to be expanding.

I hope your recovery goes well. Feel free ot e-mail me anytime.

Cheers,

Joel

Another Saskatchewanian here! Just starting to snoop for info until after the holidays when I can focus more attention to it! Does anyone know if GMS (or other insurance companies) pays to have the surgery in Toronto or Winnipeg?

I'm almost 10 months into my band and couldn't be happier. Only one fill at 6 wks post-op and am down about 50 lbs. I told only my hubby and 2 kids about the surgery so, I know how it feels to be kind of alone in the experience. That's why sites like this one are so valuable.

I lived in Prince Albert for forever! We moved to Saskatoon about 1 1/2 yrs ago. We probably know each other, it is such a small world.

Mamma G, maybe you need a fill? I know 2 fill nurses here in S'toon. Contact me if you need #'s.

Were you at the meeting Nov. 15 where Dr. Carmen Cajella was down, I'm sure she was from Dr. Corvalla's clinic.

It's tough when you've got 10 kids to care for and for yourself too! I find 2 kids and 4 dogs a challenge.

You can do this! You have this awesome tool!

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
