I had my surgery 1 week ago today and everything has been fine except I am waking up in the middle of the night about 2 am STARVING. It is the worst pains. It feels like spasms. I mentioned it to the nurse and she said it is probably my blood sugar dropping around that time and it is waking me up. She said to try eating something before I go to bed. I have tried that, but it is still happening. I haven't slept a full night since the surgery because of having to get up and eat. Has anyone else had this happen? I don't know how much longer I can take it.

Hi, this has happened to me a few times. I was banded 5/23. I find if I keep a bottle of crystal light next to the bed, and a take a few sips of that, it keeps my tummy busy just long enough for me to fall back asleep. I also started to take my chewable Vitamin at night, which I think has helped too.. I kept forgetting to take it during the day.

If it is your blood sugar it could be made worse by lack of Protein right now. This happened to me the 2nd week after surgery, since I sleep walk I was afraid I would eat in my sleep and get sick or hurt my pouch or band. I started having a Peanut Butter spoon, like you did as a kid, just before bed, and that helped, as I was able to get more protein in during the day in the way of foods, like meat and cheese and Beans, it stopped happening. Since you are just fresh out of surgery I don't know if your Dr would let you have the peanut butter, if so give it a try. I still do it, If I start to have a night time hunger pain, one small spoon, has plenty of protein, some carbs so it meets both requirements for me. Good luck

Carrie,

I am also a week post op and did have the same problem for about 2 nights. You may not be getting enough Protein. Try taking in some type of protein supplement before going to bed. I enjoy the Carnation Instant Bfast drink (sugar free) with soy milk and a extra bit of my powder protein mixed in. This definitely takes the hunger away for me. Good luck to you!!

Carrie, you can have anything that fits through a straw on the liquid phase. I would eat some liquid form yogurt or creamy Soup which is made with milk. It really helped me early on. Good luck.

This happened to me too. It is better now, 2 weeks post-op. What saved me was going to our local Chinese restaurant and getting egg drop Soup - but not eating the egg part. Very filling. I also had a lot of yogurt and fat-free pudding with fat free whipped cream. Hang in there, it will get better.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
