I was banded in Sept. 2007 and after my third fill still didnt loose any weight. My doctor told me at each fill that I was not allowed to eat carbs. I am so ashamed of my failure to give up carbs, I havnt gone back to the doctor since the third fill. Is it really me? If I had know that success depended on my ability to give up carbs, I would have just stuck with Atkins and saved alot of $$$. I am soooo discouraged. Am I the only person on the planet that cant loose with the band?

ctbhhm,

Are you able to eat more than a half a cup of food? Maybe you have a leak in your band. The Fluid may not be staying in the band sounds like something is wrong. Hank Frank

The first thing you need to make sure is that you are getting enough Protein, you can never ever loose without it. You have to eat enough (or drink) enough Protein.< /span>

You HAVE TO exercise, you have to whether you want to or not. Your body needs it to keep loosing.

DO NOT drink with meals, it makes you hungrier faster.

Get junk food out of the house, this is my big problem! IF it is there we eat it, so just let it go away!

I've never heard that you shouldn't eat any carbs but I do watch my carb intake but I do limit myself. Write down everything you eat during the day for a week. Go to Calorie Counter, Diet Tracking, food Journal, Nutrition Facts at The Daily Plate and record what you eat, check protein contents and track your exercise.

If all these things check out you do need to see your doctor with your record of what you are eating because I have a friend that was band and had 5 fills before getting the proper restriction. You are right, this is too much money to not let this wonderful tool work for you.

Just make sure you are not cheating your band.

I've hit a plateau but after re-evaluating my diet and cutting out some of the goods I was eating, I am now losing again.

I wish you well ....

You have to give up some carbs but not completely. You have to have an equal balance of fats, protien, carbs. I was banded on 12/17 and have lost 61 lbs and I still eat carbs everyday. I don't suggest that you eat Potatoes and Mac and cheese and Corn all in one sitting but a baked potatoe will not hurt you. Eat only serving sizes and drink your Water and get enough protien. You should not be able to eat as much food as you are. I have had 5 fills to get me to my sweet spot. It may take more than 3 for you. Don't give up. This tool will work if you allow it to work. It will not do all the work for you by any means. You have to move too. Take the long way to the mail box, park in the far end of the lot at Walmart. Get those few extra steps and you will be amazed at the difference it will make.

Good luck...keep us posted and don't give up now. You are just getting started. Hang in there.

You dont have to give up carbs - just try to avoid the white processed ones. I've eaten carbs the entire way through, in any given day I'm likely to eat a Cereal like muesli and a slice of wholegrain bread and I certainly dont avoid Pasta, potato or rice either.

But if that's a typical dinner for you, your diet needs a major overhaul, you'll never lose weight eating foods that heavy and stodgy without balancing it out with lots of fresh vegies. Just the tuna, or just the egg or even a bit of each plus a large salad would have been a way better choice. Or put some tuna between the bread if you love bread, along with some salad veges.

Eating carbs like bread has not hurt my weight loss one single bit and I will need to see a LOT more evidence before I believe they arent wholesome healthy foods full of fibre and Vitamins (I dont eat crap supermarket white bread by the way). But they're hard to eat and we dont need a diet loaded with carbs at every meal, I'd tend to choose a sandwich for lunch (but cant eat a whole one).

dinner would be much better as a piece of lean Protein (chicken, fish, red meat) a small serve of a carb like half a potato and some steamed veges.

But a slice of pizza AND a sandwich with a lap band, that would take some doing. You either need more fill or there may be something wrong. Have you had any symptoms like fills being totally ineffective, do you have any symptoms of restriction or are you pushing past feeling full and need to conquer head hunger?

its no mystery why you havent lost weight eating like that, but what you might need help with is why you can eat like that. Good luck, I hope you get it sorted.

I am not banded yet, but I have learned some pretty good advice along this journey . . . from here, from my nutritionist, etc. Basically, I had to learn the difference between good carbs (brown rice, etc.) and bad carbs (candy, etc.). I have also had to learn what carbs *I* can lose weight with and which I can't. Your body NEEDS carbs (something I never thought I'd admit after having success with Atkins . . . .only to gain it back when I re-introduced carbs again). However, your body doesn't need all of them. I can't lose weight if I eat potatoes, for instance. But I lose like crazy if I choose brown rice. Go figure.

It does sound, though, that if you can eat all of that food, you might need a fill and perhaps if you've had a lot of fills then you have a leak. I'm only saying that based on what I've read here and not personal experience.

Best of luck to you.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
