I heard that artificial sweeteners boost your blood sugar and they are not good to have my sister who is thin told me that years ago when she lost a bunch of weight she said it is better to use sugar it metabolizes quicker in your body.

I am so partial to most of the African coffees! And oooh aged sumatran.....

My ex-H decided that I would no longer be drinking expensive coffee, I would only be drinking canned coffee like everybody else. He was gone within the week. :D

Of course, one of the first things I did when I started my exhile was go to the 2 local coffee houses and ask about the availablity of African coffees. I thought the one guy was going to propose marriage then and there. Or at least, pledge his undieing love...:D

It could be an allergy, but, I know many who have the same problem. Some didn't realize it was the splenda until I told them about my problem. They thought they were lactose intolerant all of a sudden on the sugar free Bunny tracks. When I asked if it had splenda they said yes. I figure that is their problem, but, I am not a doctor. It causes me to have major stomach cramps and well enough said lol

In support of Denise, I also have issues with Splenda. Don't get me wrong.... it is a wonderful thing...tooo good. I really love the Russell stover low carb products and all the newest bars with Splenda. The first time I tried them I too spent some time in bathroom. But if I have a bar every night or every other night I constipate badly for a week or more. I been going through this for a couple of years... because I keep going back to these newest good tasting Splenda products, but they don't like me as much as I like them. I guess a few of us Do have some type of allergy to Splenda. It does have a splendid taste though! I am glad to know most of you have no physical reaction to it.

I've been using a lot of splenda & at the back of my mind is always that this can't be great for me. I'm going to the health food store to get Stevia tomorrow. Does anyone recommend the liquid over the powder or vice versa?

I use Stevia for everything. I use different varieties for different things. Probably a personal hangup. I don't like the liquid in Yogurt but do in most everything else. Also, there is a variety with Fiber. Stevia Plus Fiber products. I am attaching the info from my food coop website. Please let me know if this would be a problem after

SteviaPlus - Don't sweeten your coffee, supplement it! SteviaPlus is a naturally sweet tasting, highly beneficial product that can be used in all beverages and foods. Convenient for preparing Cereal or fruit and stable for both heating and freezing, SteviaPlus is a unique and versatile product that does not have a bitter aftertaste. SteviaPlus has a glycemic index of 0 and does not affect blood sugar. Safe for diabetics, it is 8-10 times sweeter than sugar.

Stevia is a small green plant native to Paraguay and provides the intense sweetness for SteviaPlus. SteviaPlus also contains Frutafit Inulin Fiber (FOS), a functional food ingredient found in chicory, fruits and vegetables. Mildly sweet and zero calories per servings, FOS is a premium soluble fiber that selectively nourishes the friendly bacteria (lactobacillus and bifidobacteria) in the intestines. The increased number of these good bacteria will help gastrointestinal functions and may: improve regularity, cleanse the colon, support liver health, assist and strengthen the immune system, help control the formation of free radicals.

Nothing to do with artificial sweetner, but being from Seattle I had to chime in about the coffee talk. My all time favorite is Peets Italian Roast with half and half. I've never understood how folks could put nonfat milk in coffee!--turns it kind of bluish-gray-ech

I use splenda all the time (and yes, I put it in my coffee most of the time, but coffee is best with real sugar, I can't do black). I wonder if maybe it agrivates arthritis, which I don't have, so it doesn't bother me. I also don't have IBS so it doesn't bother me that way either.

I just bought both straight powdered stevia (very sweet) and the packets w/fiber which I can't wait to try tomorrow. Always looking for fiber! I have nothing against splenda, it just worries, especially being a cancer survivor. Jack, I read your post AFTER I bought the stevia...I'll also have to try the liquid.

Vinesqueen: I had a real treat last year...a small bag of Beans from Zambezi or Zambia whatever....I hope to find another sample....there is a beanery in Boise Idaho that has a fairly large selection of African beans....I will be sure to return there on my next trip to restock....

Geeze Capn't Jack! you do know how to stir a gurl's lust! Or make her jelous, or soemthing :) Yup, Sulawesi is wonderful!

Non-fat milk in coffee???? Say it isn't so! (she weeps softly over her cup of french pressed Kenya AA with half and half with dark muscovado sugar)

I bought the straight powdered stevia and the packets that also contain fiber. I use 1/2 packet per cup of tea. Tastes great! I can't figure out how much fiber it actually has, but I'm all for more fiber!)

When I opened the powdered stevia bottle, it spilled a little; when I finished cleaning it up, my fingers were super-sweet for hours after. That stuff is strong! I'm gonna give up the splenda for my tea & cereal. This can only be a good thing, right?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
