I was banded on May 13th. I have lost 30 lbs and 2 1/2 inches. I have absolutely no regrets. This was a hard sell to my wife. She just didn't fell that it was needed. Since then she has changed her mind and is actually losing a litt.le weight herelf(not that she needed to). Since I work outside and HATE Gatorade I began drinking Powerade. That has helped me lose the craving for sodas.

The band was the best thing I have done for myself. I do not look at it as giving up something such as sodas or bread, but I look at it as gaing a new life for myself. The only things I am giving up are diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. period. I have lost twenty pounds since I started my pre-op diet until now and all I can say is wow. My clothes do not fit me tight anymore, I can walk two or three miles without huffing and puffing. I am very happy with my band.

I feel the same way, Coco. And think of how much funner it will be shopping for clothes in NORMAL sizes!

I would strongly encourage you to put yourself first. Think of your health and what is best for you. It's disappointing that your husband isn't putting your health first, but you have to make this choice for you and a longer, happier future! Standing up for yourself and doing what you know is right for you, will make you feel great too.

I think it's natural to have second thoughts.... most of us go through a time where we wonder if we're making the right decision, but I think that just shows that we're being realistic about it and thinking it through carefully!

I was banded on May 15th; I was self-pay too and one small consolation is that the cost is tax deductlble, so I'll get a small portion of the money back in early 2009.

Good luck to you! I am sure if you have the surgery, you will be very glad you did.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
