k so I'm worried because...every pamphlet that was in my doctor's office said you only lose 50% of your excess weight. but it said gastric bypass loses 80%...I mean from what I've seen a lot of people are losing a lot more than 50%...and I'm thinking because I'm only 18 it'll be a little easier...and I'm pretty sure they are just trying to make money. Anyway I decided last Friday night I was for sure doing it. I've already got my seminar done, my referal from my physcian and I filled out the psych evalution questionairres and am going tomorrow morning for my appointment. And my consult with my surgeon is on June 10th...I can't believe this is going so fast...I'm starting to get nervous...

You get out what you are willing to put in.

Willing to follow your doctors instruction, get fills and work at it?

You can lose alot more then 50%. I started at 256, had surgery 11/12/07 and as of this morning I weighed in at 169.

I think thats is a case by case basis. I had surgery 5 months ago today, and I have already lost 30%, with no chance of slowing down at all! I am sill consistantly losing 2 lbs per week at least. Dont be scared by statistics!

Long term studies show that band and bypass patients lose the same amount on average in the long run though bypass patients lose it faster at first.

But keep in mind these are all averages. If the average loss is 50% that means some people lost nothing or even gained and some lost all their excess weight and maybe even a bit more with everything in between. Knowing the average is helpful, IMO, but it say nothing about how much weight any one individual is going to lose.

I've lost 120%, and I definitely agree, you get out of it what you are willing to put in. Especially when it comes to exercising.

I'm at 94% lost by my Dr's recent calculations. 50% is an average, if you work with your band there is no reason why you won't lose 100%.

Yes, those are averages. My doctor told me the same thing -- bypass patients tend to have a faster, more dramatic weight loss in the beginning, but after a few years bypass patients and lapband patients have all averaged out to about the same. It just depends on how much you want to lose. My doctor told me it's entirely possible for me to lose 100 pounds in a year, if I work with my lapband.

I had mine in October and I've lost 60% and still going. And I'm OLD. I didn't lose for about 3 weeks and then this week I lost 5 pounds. Not everyone is the same, you might lose 120%, lol so don't put too much stock into those articles.

Are you sure it didn't say Gastric Bypass patients lose 80% and LB patients lose 50% of their goal weight in the 1st year?

GB patients will lose faster than LB patients but I haven't heard of a reason for limiting the amount you can lose if you follow the plan. This web site is proof that you can lose every bit of your goal weight and more if need be.

I am only 3 months post op and have lost 31% of my goal weight since the 1st consult for LBS.

Remember, LBS is still about the effort you are willing to put into it. If you don't eat properly and exercise you won't lose anything.

yeah I'm not even kidding it said:

Gastric Bypass loses 80% of excess weight in 1 and 1/2 years and

Lap Band loses 50% in 3 to 5 years.

Yeah I'm getting it regardless lol but I just thought those stats were a little off.

Well, that may be a disclaimer...you know so they won't get sued.

I've lost ALL my excess body weight and 'normal' on the bmi chart...not even slightly overweight.

Decide for yourself.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
