Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Thinking about using Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

I am 23 and weigh over 300lbs, and my parents have recently offered to pay for a lapband procedure(which is wonderful cuz hubby and I are poor college students paying off medical bills from his 2 knee surgeries last year). They want to have it done quickly and I am looking at where to get the best price cuz there is no way my insurance would cover WLS. I am looking to know people's experiences with Dr.K and have read several pages of the posts below mine, and am feeling very encouraged. Please tell me about your experiences with Dr.K. I need all the info I can get!!!:scared2:

I think his crew is great! I flew from WI to Colorado to have this and I was self pay also. I was very scared that I was going to get out there and he would be in some back alley clinic or something. Anyway, That was my biggest worry, but when I got there, his office is in a huge clinic and the same with the surgery center. Everything went excellant with mine and I have lost 52 pounds so far. The only problem I had, was my oxygen level was low after surgery, so I had to rent an oxygen tank over night. Other then that, I am over a month out, still never feel hungry, I am eating 2 meals a day, 2 protien shakes a day, and I feel awesome!!

Hi,

My Name is Denise, I have used Dr. K for my lap band surgery and he is aweswome. I had mine done feb. 08 and have lost over 50 lbs. I have also sent a friend to him she had her surgery monday. I think you can not go wrong with him. By the way I am a registered nurse and live in Grand Junction so for me to go all the way to Denver for this surgery says alot. Go for it and good luck honey you will not regret it!

Hi, I was banded by Dr. K on 1/2/08 it has been the best thing that I have ever done. I was a self pay as well. I actually did very little research about the band, had 1 consult (with Dr. K) and scheduled my surgery the day of my consult. I found lbt.com after I had my band placed. I love him, his staff and my band. Plus I have made some awesome friends here on lbt.com that have also had surgery by him. I have lost over 50 lbs. so far and only have about 30 more to go. Best of luck to you on this life changing journey. Go for it you deserve to be happy, healthy and beautiful.

lotza~I am just a year out with my band and I am very happy with my decision.

Your parents are giving you a wonderful gift. If you decide to go with Dr, K, I think you will be very happy.

The only regret that I have is that I didn't have it done when I was your age (or that they weren't availble WAAAAY back then).

Dr. K has an amazing staff too!

keep us posted on your decision and your journey!

hope your hubby is doing better too!

What do you folks do about follow-ups and required fills when going out of state to get banded?

Well, I talked to Dr. K about this very issue . . . we have a Fill Center USA in our city and Dr. K is going to check on its reputation. I am hoping that it will turn out to be a good place. Otherwise I will just travel to Denver (I'm in SLC so not all that far).

Have you traveled back to CO for follow-up or do you have a dr. locally who is following your progress (not the fills)?

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
