Gastric Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I wonder if you could give me some feedback on the surgery as how did go for you and how much weight have you lost since because I'm going for the sleeve at the end of the month

I am 5 months out. Lost over 80 pounds. The surgery went pretty well, for the most part. If you want a lot of details, I am posting about my progress in my blog. (Link below)

Mac I am interested in what a days food looks like for you. I clicked on your blog, but not sure where to look for something like that. It scares me to get the sleeve because I eat really small portions already. I am afraid I will eat even smaller portions. It's hard to go to dinner with friends already, since I can only eat a little bit. Eating out is one of the only things I do socially, so I would like to know that I won't be sitting there watching everyone else eat.

Right now, if I order a regular dinner, I eat a few bites of the salad, most of the meat, and a bites of veggies. If I ate the entire salad, I would be done and not be able to eat any of the meal that would be coming.

That sounds about what I eat now but I'm told I will be able to eat more by the end of the year. And WASa and I are people who can eat a lot less than average. I think maybe because we are short.

Go to our sleeve group on The Daily Plate (link in my signature) and you can find out what we all eat. I haven't entered much for March but Feb. should all be there. Plus you'll see everyone else's food to get a more complete picture.

Hey M....

On that thread did you notice that Pompa has the biggest sleeves... to the point that her patients aren't even losing weight after 4 months? They can eat like a heifer.

No wonder they aren't losing weight.

I'm not short, I'm 5/5.5. My surgeon just makes tight sleeves. That's a good thing. ;o)

Thanks Mac, I will do just that. Didn't realize that the Daily Plate had that type of info!

After looking it over, I am really freaked out. I have bladder/urinary tract problems (interstitial cystitis) and it's very important that I get tons of Water in, or I am in a lot of pain. This worries me. I went to an alternative medicine dr. and he put me on a lot of herbs which really help, but I drink a ton of water to get them all down.

It looks like getting liquids down for the first few weeks is really an issue:crying:

This is why you don't go to someone who is inexperienced... and associated with Betancourt.

I opened up all my herbs today and put them in Water just to see how it would taste. It's not so bad. I hope I can get them down when the time comes.

Mac, your blog is very informative. Informative, but scary. It's really going to be hard. It's going to be a lot harder than my band surgery. I am even more freaked out.

In a way it is good that you are prepared for the worse case scenario, then nothing will come as a surprise. But in reality I don't think it will be as bad as you think.

I'm just waiting for the "other one" to announce the .... announcement! ;o)

Sooo.... "other one"... when are you making the huge announcement? We are excited for you, SPEAK UP DAMNIT!

;o))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Really? I feel like I've had a pretty easy time of it, over all. But I do want it to be *real* and not butterflies and glitter.

She has announced it on the post to post thread, if it's who I think you're talking about it.

Mac, you were nauseous and had acid problems, and said you felt hungry. Plus nobody at work knows I am having this done, so it's going to tricky going back to work.

I would rather know what I am getting myself into, than thinking once the initial pain is gone, everything will be fine.

Where do you get your Vitamins and Calcium? I don't want any bad labs. I need a chewable calcium citrate.

That must have been someone else who was nauseous. I never had nausea. For the acid, I only thought I had acid problems. It turned out I was drinking too fast -- which made me think I was hungry when I wasn't. So it was all inter-related.

But lots and lots of people are hungry at first especially on the liquid diet. So be prepared!

My biggest problem is that I wasn't drinking enough Water (because I tried to slow down) and passed a kidney stone. What can I say? I was DUMB!

For Calcium, I just use Citrical because I like to use stuff I can grab at the grocery store. If I have to order it online, I'd constantly run out.

In the early days, I couldn't swallow the Citrical though so I was using Tums. My post-op manuals said it was okay for the first 3 weeks. But I kept taking them after that. (I misread that part. I just noticed later it said only at first.) So I got the kidney stone. Like I said: I was dumb!

I take the Citrical petites. They are pretty easy to get down at this point.

I thought you weren't supposed to be hungry and that was the whole point of the sleeve. No hormone that makes hunger?

Hi, I'm interest in knowing wich insurance approved you for your sleeve. Mine denied it because it is still an experimental surgery, not proven. I want to be able to have the option to choose in between by pass and sleeve. I did heard that at the end of April 09 probably the American Society of metabolic and bariatric surgeons are going to approve the sleeve surgery.

I find better interaction with gastric sleeve info on this sight as opposed to obesity help..PLEASE keep posts coming..if someone doesn't want to read about VGS than don't read...we are all here to help one another. It seems there are lapbanders with numerous problems so if they learn more info about sleeve it may be of great value to their health.

I was almost a bandster and realized the fills would not work for me. I have many relatives with diabetes which is why I chose sleeve and the aspect of the lower maintenance appealed to me. This does not mean I don't respect someone's choice for lapband.

I have several friends with LB who are very happy. Networking is the name of the game and if we can help one another why not?

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
