New to this board

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I am new to this board and website. I was banded on March 26th in Valley Hospital in NJ by Dr. Greddis. I am so happy I had it done. I have my first fill on 6/10 and alittle nervous. Not sure what to expect from it. So far I am down 24 lbs. I have been walking, (need to do more). Just wanted to touch base with people to see how they are doing and how long it took to get the weight off. I would love to hear from people with any idea's for foods, excerise and life in general. Thanks JENN

Welcome Jenn,

This is a fantastic place. I too am a Dr. Gritsus patient. I was banded 12/27/05 and lost 135 lbs in 16 months but the rate you loose has much to do with how much you have to loose. I try to attend the monthly support meetings held by Susanna the nutritionist and I also go to weekly support with Dr. Sakowitz. I find the support is such a help. food ideas and such and meeting others that are going through the same process you are helps to keep you on track. Congrats on your loss, your off to a great start:thumbup:

Thanks for the reply. I know there is another support meeting with susanna on 6/19, I promised her I would try very hard to get there. With 3 kids it gets hard. I have my first fill on 6/10. Not sure what to expect. I am so glad that I did this. I have been walking and Susanna want's me to start on toning also. I just got a pilates tape last night I will try it later. Hope to see you on the 19th. Let me know if you plan on going, I would love to meet you. :wink2:

Hey Jenn,

Unfortunately I will not be able to make Susanna's meeting on the 19th :)

It is my son's high school graduation.... and listen to Susanna... she's right about the toning. Keep up your good work and perhaps I will catch you at the July meeting.... Should be the 17th.... Keep posting and searching the site for inspiration... I believe it helps to talk to peeps who are going through the same process for support!

and

Joelle

I see your from Jersey, not sure where but get to a seminar. I did much research but when I went to my Doc's seminar the light bulb lit... he takes the time to talk to any one who has questions and usually has one or two "alumni" from both kinds of surgeries to tell about personal experiences and answer questions too... you have taken the first step by searching the boards.. there is oodles of information here.... Good Luck and God Bless! :)

Hi Jenn, and welcome!

Don't worry too much about the fills, they're a piece of cake (or not). Support group meetings are helpful too, but this place is open 24/7 if you have anything needs addressing right away, provided it's not something that should be handled by your surgeon or doctor of course!

Hi Jennhen,

I too am a Dr. Gritsus patient. I was banded 11/14/07 6 1/2 months ago and am 72lbs down. Just stick to hit, keep head strong and you can do it! I was in a PANIC about my fill, there is nothing to it, and it doesn't hurt. I will be at Susanna's meeting, and I go to the Dr. Sakowitz weekly meeting, try to make it to one. It definately helps, keeps you on track and motivated. Good Luck!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
