Question for you post-opers

Recommended Posts

I am still awaiting my surgery date, but I had a question. My DH and I have a trip to Florida planned in the Fall. I am hoping to get a surgery date asap, but if they offer me something in the 6 weeks prior to the vacation, do you recommend declining it and waiting until after the vacation?

We are going to be at Disney for a day or two and I don't want to be in too much pain walking around and going on rides.

How long did it take you to feel "okay" enough that you would have been comfortable going on a vacation with lots of activity?

Thanks

I fly alot for work, and was able to feel good while traveling about 2 weeks post op. At 3 weeks I felt great. I am at 4 weeks post op now and feel completely normal. I would definately discuss with my healthcare providers and see what they recommend/allow. My Dr. wouldn't let me fly for the first 10 days.

I felt ok week 2, but I felt much better during the 3rd week post-op. We traveled to the Smoky Mountains about 6 hours by car from where I live. We rented a cabin with an fantastic kitchen so I was able to stick to my post-op diet. It was a home away from home!

You should be feeling good enough to walk around by the 3rd week, but I would probably avoid any of the action rides, and stick to the easier rides where you won't get tossed around. Good Luck with your surgery, hope you hear about a date soon.

Tess

I am 12 days post-op and I went back to work today for a few hours. I could have gone back earlier but I have the time and decided to take it. I was supposed to drive 10 hours to visit friends on the 22nd but just didn't feel up to it. I really think that you will feel perfectly normal at six weeks out. And think about all of the exercise that you will be able to get in.

Hi,

I think you would be much happier getting the lap band before you trip. You will be down a few lbs and that always makes you feel great. I had my surgery in Mexico. The day after surgery I flew home about 4 1/2 hours and then had a 2 hour drive. I think I took 2 pain pills the next 2 days but I was back to work the day after I got home doing massage. You shouldn't have any problems. I'm 58 so if I can do it that easily I'm sure you can. Have fun and Celebrate the beginning of your new life!

Blessings,

Sally

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
