What am I doing wrong???

Recommended Posts

I had my third fill 3 weeks ago. At that time, I told the doc that I thought the weight loss was slow(only 7 lbs. in the last 6 weeks). I did feel some restriction, but not too much .He added .5 to the 6.5 I already had in the 10cc band. Now even after the 3 weeks, I am having one heck of a time eating most of the time. Two spoons of mashed potatoes and I am done.About 3 oz. of yogurt and I feel like I need to PB. It hurts occasionally when my Vitamins go down. I have dropped 12 pounds now in 3 weeks, but it sure hasn't been a comfortable three weeks. I don't know what to even attempt to eat, because it hurts so soon after. Then there is other times when I can eat a pack of crackers with no problem, or a bowl of popcorn with no problem. IS THIS NORMAL????? Should I wait till I go back in three weeks. Will it get easier in a week or two. Should I go back to the doc before my next scheduled visit and get some removed. Let me know what you think. This is the first problem I've run into and I will admit it scares me a little.

Jack, thanks for this suggestion "pureed deli meat with a little LF yogurt" for days when I am feeling extra tight or irritated. I have struggled to find a good savory Protein.

I am really tight until about 4-5 p.m at night so I usually just have a slimfast for Breakfast and lunch then I eat my supper and I am as loose as can be. it is so weird how tight i am in the a.m and loose I am in the p.m .

I have not been getting my Protein like I should. The Protein Shakes just won't go down in the morning. Slimfast is thinner ,but I even have a hard time with that.None of these problems started till my last fill. My morning coffee even feels like it gets stuck. Later on in the day the restriction doesn't seem as bad but it hurts to even eat things like applesauce or Jello. I just don't know if this is normal or if I should make an earlier appointment with my doc. I understand that this is a big metabolic change, but my first 19 weeks went by without a hitch. Why now? Am I doing something wrong?

kari68,

You just helped more than you know. I should have read everyones reply before my last post. I did not realize that there was a difference in restriction at different times of the day. It helps.I don't quite understand why this is so.

To me that sounds like you are too tight, especially since it has been happening since your last fill. When you get close to the spot, even a little fill can make a big difference. I'd see your doctor and ask to have half of the last fill taken out (i.e. if you last fill was 0.5ml, take out 0.25ml), then see how that goes. You are not supposed to be so tight that you can't eat at all or can only manage liquids! When you are having problems with liquids, it's time to see the doc.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
