I have read many threads on here about hair loss. I just finished a long one that started 2006 < a poll> I wanted to ask: Anyone who posted back then with Hair loss issues...did they ever get better?!?

I have noticed hair loss since my surgery in January. I would say I have lost 50% of my hair easy. I am lucky to have started with very thick full hair *sigh* but oh the pony tail is getting thin. My hair is very long <mid-back> and it breaks my heart to have SO MUCH of it come out, like clumps. I have read about the supplements, and Shampoo treatments etc etc but bottom line....Have those that had hair loss problems notice it coming back?!? :confused2:

Thanks

YES I had a time period of three months to were I had a too tight fill. Some days it was okay and others I could hardly swallow my saliva. So I did go threw a period that I was not getting enough nutricition and I started to notice Hair loss and it was freaking me out because I have really thick nice hair. So I went to Max Muscle and bought Pure Protein Drinks which would go down fine and they have 35 grams of Protein in them. I started to have those at 11 each day and one around 3. I also started taking Biotin. Let me tell you that stuff is GREAT!!!!! My nails are stronger then they ever have been now and with me bumping up the protein and taking the biotin everyday for three months now my hair is thicker and shiny again. Just make sure your really getting the water/protein your body needs and you should notice a difference. It is easy to forget the protein now that it is harder to eat solids. I used to eat chix all the time but now it is hard to eat it. Beans are good protein too but it is hard for me to eat with out killing everyone with bad gas. So I stick to the shakes and just keep them in the frige at work and sip it at my desk everyday. They taste pretty good and make you full. This whole experience had made everything going into my mouth a total science. Protein/Iron/Vitamins it is a good way to look at food as fuel not emotional crutches anymore!!!!!!! I now am at a good level fill because it is tight enough for me to now overeat but loose enough to slowly eat a salad and everyonce in awhile get meat and or fish down.

I was banded 12/26/07. I started losing my hair in early March. The doc said that I had depleted my Protein store. ( Any extra that I had stored is gone now too). He said I needed to get more than what they recommended after surgery. When I was able to eat more regular foods I wasn't drinking Protein Shakes as aften and that is how it happened. About two weeks after I started back on the shakes and started taking Biotin, I noticed there wasn't as much Hair loss. Now it is growing back fast and thick. My nails are growing like crazy too. Good luck . Remember protein, PROTEIN, Protein and then some more protein.

I swear you guys get a bottle of Biotin and try it out. It works great for Hair loss and it also makes nails strong too!!!

My Dr said that the Hair loss is a result of the body's going into a 'starvation mode' trying to protect vital organs because its not getting the quantities of food that its use to having. More of a physiological issue rather than a nutritional one. She said it can take up to 9 months for the body to normalize. Her experience shows that hair products don't do anything for it and that you'll have to wait it out. But it will end!

Have you guys checked out the products on Bariatric Advantage online. I get my multi vitam there because they are chewable and their products are made for weight loss surgery so they desolve very quickly. Check out their products to see if they have something to help out. Try their multi vita they taste good. All the chewables I would buy at Vitamin Store or Mothers Market would taste horrible.

Hi guys- I haven't lost hair yet but my Dr. suggested I take in 80-90 grams daily and perhaps he knew more than he spoke? Anyway I have taken everything that he said very seriously try to stay at 1200 calories and 80 grams of Protein.

Here's a tip I learned in another forum. Google "protidiet" shakes. There are currently three flavors; choc/vanilla/strawberry. I purchased 60 of them to start and got the price down to $1.54. Free Shipping, no tax and coupon code "SAVE10" They arrived in 3 days and each is in it's own 8oz bottle with the dry Protein mix dry. I can pop them into my purse and add Water whereever it's convenient. Most Protein drinks have 190 calories so you can get the protein in without the extra calories.

Also, you might want to buy sugar free syrups. Starbucks has them for $6.99 (big bottle) in mocha, carmel, hazelnut, raspberry Really taste good in the shakes!

Good luck to everyone-

Ollie

I have read some research on this and it does appear that it is the body's reaction to depleted nutrient reserves. Some bodys do it and some don't. It will grow back.

One study I read said that obese people tend to have full and shiny hair cause it is so well nourished. That would describe mine, all right.

Mine started falling out about 6 weeks ago. Not horrible, but enough to make me sad. I upped my Vitamins, and got some bariatric vitamins with extra Biotin in them. It has slowed and is already growing back. I have a bit of a halo around my face. Of course it's grey. I thought maybe I would get lucky and it would come back a lovely brunette. Ha! LOL. Can't have everything. My doctor said it was just your body adjusting to all the changes, and promised it would grow back. It is.... just not the right color damn it!

aubrie...amen sista!

I know that coloring my hair right now well it's "falling out" isn't a great idea but...the 3 hairs I do have left are gray and I am just not ready to go there!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
