Problems with Kidney Stones?

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I had to rush to the ER, but not because of something I ate. I had a kidney stone. I've only had one previous experience with a kidney stone a few years ago when I went on Medifast, a high Protein liquid diet, for 3 weeks. Since I'm taking a lot of protein supplements, I've been concerned about getting another kidney stone, and unfortunately that happened. I've been drinking a lot of Water since being banded. Has anyone else had problems with kidney stones after lap band surgery?

I actually have had the opposite effect. This is the first time that I have gone longer than 9 months without a kidney stone for the last 6 or 7 years. I usually got them every 6-9 months (I have had them at least 10 times), but so far...knock on wood...I haven't had them.

Make sure you get it analyzed and find out what kind of stone it is. I get both the oxalic acid and the Calcium stones so diet change was not an option for me.

I hope you are feeling better because I know how painful those dang things are.

Kidney stones *can* be a complication of a high Protein diet, but you may be just prone to them too. Too much Protein can cause both the Calcium and uric acid kinds (I think?)

If you are advised to change your diet, be assured that Australians arent advised to do the protein first thing at allo, we're advised to follow the traditional healthy diet - based on the food pyramid - ie. a carb/fruit/vegetable based diet with moderate protein - and we lose weight down here just as well as people anywhere else in the world. So its not necessarily problematic if the traditional lap band diet prescribed in North America doesnt suit you.

Hopefully you'll have no more episodes, I believe its excruciating.

I developed or rather the problem came up with "stones" 6 month after being banded, on both sides. 2 were stuck in the ureter r-side & 1 huge one the left side. Now whether this is due to the "band" no one can/will tell me. After reading the Aussie gal's comment on their diet, this seems a much better approach to moderating the risk. I was 51 when banded and never thought I would have a problem with stones......until now. My doc prescribed potassium citrate to prevent any further ones from forming. I warn you though it is a nasty pill, I break in half & take, drinks lots of Water when you do take it, and make sure you have eaten something tangible or else it feels like its burning a hole in your stomach.

It is interesting I had nausea (violent) and shakes and loads of pain after surgery, Did you? I did have urtetoscopy and lithotripsy at the same time. Could this account for it? Did your band Doc do your next fill with a flouroscope? Any way hope to hear how you are. I post infrequently but read all the time as questions come up.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
