partners reactions

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering girls how did your husbands or partners react to you when you told your decisions on getting the band good or bad ?

My DH was banded before I was. I believe I did the happy dance when he told me he was getting the Band, or at the very least, I danced a quick jig :)

I bet he'll be happy for you. Me and my husband are doing it together, 2 days apart. It needs to be something that you are doing for yourself, not for someone else. If you are happy with your decision then I am sure your husband will be happy too!

My husband went into panick mode. Oh no, is she gonna be alright???? Then after I sat down and we really talked about why I wanted this he said he would back me 100%. Now he calls himself the food police. He is always watching and checking up on me. Some days it drives me crazy but most of the time I know he is just looking out for me. This is his way to be involved with the whole process. Now he makes comments about me getting a boyfriend when I lose the weight but who needs one, I married my best friend and boyfriend so I have the best of both worlds!!!! :banana

My husband was leery at first..a little scared about a surgery, but then when I showed him some of the stuff on LBT, he began to see that this might be something that would work well for me. After watching me struggle all throughout our marriage, and knowing that the weight I did manage to lose for our wedding was Diet Pill induced, he began to come around. His comment: I know I don't understand all this diet stuff, and why losing weight is so hard. I think this will work.

And then the Mexico factor...my insurance excludes the Lap Band, and so I did some price checking, and Mexico was the way for us to go. My husband was confident about Dr Kuri's experience and that was reassuring for both of us. He saw two things...my research (relentless) and the fact that noone hates their band, even the ones who have had problems and difficulties. He walks around saying "I Love My Band!!!" because he sees people write this all the time on LBT! Success speaks volumes.

Now he's a great cheerleader for me, a bit of a worry wart, but very supportive and hopeful. It's great!

My husband was extremely supportive from the very first utterance I gave of WLS! A few of his co-workers had GBP, so he was *somewhat* familear... although he said "no way" for me having the GBP!

Like Kathy, my hubby also helped me look up stuff on the internet about the band....

I think this helps our partners feel "included" on this decision.

:) good luck!

Mine did not know what the band was but I really just said I am doing this for me and I supported you when you had your heart Surgery now it is my time. I did and do include him in the pre and post op process of what I am going through so that he feels he is part of my journey. That way he really does not have to feel left out.

My partner was excited for me. She had hers 2 years prior, and knew most of the goods and bads of the band.

Now me..when I first found out my partner was getting the band, I freaked. I freaked again when I found out she was going to Mexico. I cried...I was scared to death for her. Finally, we went and it wasn't so bad. I had alot of visions in my head about what it would be like...I was wrong. Day to day my opinion changed, as I saw how happy she was and how much easier her life was getting.

Mine said his usuaul saying, "honey, if you are happy, then I am happy." he is very supportive all the time usually. Then.... I told him I was going to Tijuana. Just a twinge of hesitation and raised eyebrows but still supportive. He wanted me to get it done in the states for protection of my patient rights and such. If I had known about the WISH center in Chicago, I would have gone there. I am from Chicago so I would of had family and friends around me, that would have been nice.

I had to do some convincing but he finally agreed it was the best tool available to help me loose the weight. When he found out I could go to Europe and have it done he was much more agreeable because he has always wanted to go there. So we made the trip into a mini-vacation and had a blast!

My husband is going to b Banded too. I have a feeling that even he wasn't he would be very supportive. He has watched me struggle for 15+ years. Even though I am 48 yrs old I was more afraid of my parents reaction. When I told them and also told them we might havea problem with the ins. They automatically said the would pay 1/2 the cost of both of us getting banded. I hope it doesn't come to that, but my hubby and I said thank you. We can swing the loan for 1 of us but not both, and agreed we will take the financial help after we persue our ins. How is your Dh reactiing? How has your Dh handled the fact that you are overwieght to begin with.

My DH was a little leary at first too. He hates taking meds when he's sick, hates going to the Dr, dentist, refuses to get shots, etc.... Anything to do with cutting, blood, surgery just ooks him out LOL. I didn't even tell him about it until the day after my consultation. After I explained to him what exactly the band was and after seeing the brochure he's totally on board. He's really excited for me and ever since my consultation instead of calling me by my name, Brandi, he calls me "Bandy" *roll eyes* LOL.

My husband's dad actually paid for my surgery! I think my husband was a bit skeptical at first especially since I wanted to go to Mexico for it but the more I researched the more confident he became. Obviously my father in law felt pretty confident about it too though we were all as nervous as heck when it actually came to me going down there and getting it done. Best wishes, Teresa

Hi,

My husband was supportive, but a little leery at first. He just wanted me to be sure that I did all my research and knew what I was getting into.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
