lizzy h 0 Posted May 26, 2008 Hey before I do the diet pill thing tell me this. Am I in denial about my age (yikes 43 today) if I have just discovered America's Top Model and look forward to weekends when they broadcast a marathon back to back episodes so you can waste a whole day watching a season's worth of skinny BIOTCH TV? - I am addicted!!! On to the diet pills. Has anyone tried diet pills POST OP..... do tell
lizzy h 0 Posted May 26, 2008 They did not work for me either 20 years ago, but then I expected to pop a pill and then hop on the scale and be thinner....... I am nearly 4 years out of my banding and now I think about food and eating almost constanatly. The battle is killing me and I am losing. I also seem to have lost my way to the gym. Older and more realistic now I was wondering if phentermine will give me the prod I need..... just looking to see if others have any opst op experiences
brandyII 9 Posted May 26, 2008 lizzyh I was on Meridia about 7 years ago and took off about 20+ pounds but had to go off my SSRI to take it and so it was a major ordeal for me. I then tried it again while staying on my antidepressant and it didn't work. You're not supposed to do both. Anyway phentermine did nothing for me, phenfen did but you can't get that now as far as I know. I did hear my endocrinologist say that she's had people on Meridia with either the band or the RNY but I don't remember which. So talk to your doctor and maybe they'll let you give it a shot to try to jump start you again. I know a lot of it can be mental.
lizzy h 0 Posted May 26, 2008 hey WHO ARE YOU CALLING MENTAL??? Just kidding this is what my RNY friend call ourselves when we can't get life right all the time
brandyII 9 Posted May 26, 2008 It's ok, I'm used to getting yelled at on a lot of threads!
lizzy h 0 Posted May 26, 2008 I went to the diet pill doc last week and am on day three of phendimetrizine. I understand it is very similar to phentermine. When last on phentermine (approx 15 years ago) I do not recall any effects - good or bad. This stuff definately has me a bit shaky about 2 hours after taking. Day 1 and 2 I was not obsessing about food, and I was not hungry, and for the 1st time in ages I had a sensation of fullness after a very small amount of food and I had no trouble stopping my eating. This is promising. Today is day 3, and the emotional baggage of yet another disappointing birthday has me eating "chocolate rocks" from a well meaning friend, while visions of Pasta dance in my head. Your interest has been a delightful gift today, who knows my guardian angle must have tapped you on the sholder - thanks
Lunabeane 2 Posted May 26, 2008 My weightloss clinic provides an option of using pills to jump start weightloss if patients are not seeing results after the fill process starts. I, of course, will not need to utilize these services as I am going to wake up tomorrow weighing 124 pounds!
lizzy h 0 Posted May 26, 2008 Lunabeane can i borrow your mirror and scale?

WASaBubbleButt 41 Posted May 26, 2008 I am not a fan of diet pills, not even a little. I am a fan of dealing with OCD issues. I think we have OCD tendencies with food. We think about it ALL the time. Never put it together until I was taking Luvox for something else band related (long story). I notice that each time I start taking it I don't think about food. When I stop taking it I have tons of head hunger. Oh, I deal with head hunger now, I have a great deal of control over it today vs. yesterday but with Luvox I don't have head hunger and I don't think about food unless I'm actually hungry. Guess what Luvox is used for in the US? OCD. ;o) My doc is Mexican and they use it for different reasons but that was a side effect of taking that drug. Might be something to research. It helps me to talk to people who are also struggling with the same issues, so it's a two way street. I think we can learn from each other especially if the tone is good and not condescending which some threads tend to be! Especially if you're having issues with the band like we are. I wish you well, will be gone for a while as my daughter is having gastric bypass surgery tomorrow, something I probably should have done too:smile: take care brandyII. MacMadame 81 Posted May 26, 2008 I'm not a big fan of diet pills either. Everything I've read about them says they don't work very well and they are dangerous. The average weight loss on Meridia, for example, is a mere 20 lb. OTOH, it can raise blood pressure. Given what phenfen did to people's hearts, that makes me nervous. I'm willing to risk my heart in order to lose a mere 20 lb. I can lose 20 lb. just by drinking more Water, eating more Protein and taking up an active hobby like ballroom dancing. It's 100 lb. that I can't lose without help. If Meridia was giving patients 50 lb. weight losses, I could see it, but not 20 lb.
brandyII 9 Posted May 26, 2008 I also tried Alli (sp) while on the band because I thought it might counteract that fat/sugar that I was ingesting. I think I may have actually gained weight on Alli but it did keep me regular:lol: I know Meridia only makes promises of about a 20-25 pound weight loss but if that's what it takes to jump start your diet again I'm sure there are a lot of people who would try it. Major surgery is a risk also and we all took that or will take that risk. You're talking to a woman who was injected with the urine of a pregnant woman in 1979 because some quacks were doing it I think it was supposed to speed up your metabolism! Hey I was only 19 and it was $10.
MacMadame 81 Posted May 27, 2008 Major surgery is a risk also and we all took that or will take that risk. The risk needs to be commensurate with the rewards, IMO. I don't think that something that helps you lose a few pounds is worth risking damaging my heart for. Lap band surgery isn't major surgery, btw. It's minor surgery and very few people have died from it.

Lap band surgery isn't major surgery, btw. It's minor surgery and very few people have died from it. Even though I respect your wisdom MacMadame, I do think it is a bit more drastic to go through the procedure of having WLS even if it's done laproscopically usually as in the lap band . The only medication that my doctors were concerned about was that I had previously taken phenfen (sp) and did an echocardiogram to check the condition of my heart. I had success on Meridia and feel that someone may need an extra tool to jump start her success again on the band. The band is a tool and has been found to reverse it's success on some people and once you start putting back the weight what toll does that take on one's heart?
