Looking for a Support Group in Northern VA

Recommended Posts

My surgeons office has a support group in Reston. It is the first Monday of each month. I am attending tomorrow. It is at 6pm in the Reston Hospital west wing conference room C. Their number is 703-709-9701

Hi, I will be moving to Leesburg, VA next month from Southern Calif. Let me know if you find a support group. BECAUSE I AM SORELY IN NEED!

Thanks

The doctor in Reston will not let me join the groups unless I pay a transfer fee.

I can't even get a return call after two tries to discuss. Not a good sign. I am going to look for another doctor to interact with.

Check Inova Fairfax Hospital. I am told that they have a group the first Tuesday of the month. Information is from the nutritionist in my surgeons office. I have a fill scheduled in a couple of weeks. I need to get the contact information for myself, so I will pass it along. You might also find something on the Inova Fairfax website.

Looking forward to seeing you all at a meeting soon.

Might be a bit far but when I was at the GW University Hospital's info session, I asked if I could still attend their support group if I had the surgery elsewhere (more just curious because I clicked with one of the nurses) and they said yes. So maybe give them a try? It's not hard to get to at ALL from I-66 or 395 (once you know your way around this tangled mess of an urban area that is).

I never located either a doctor or support group in NoVa. I still fly to LA to see my doctor there.

I am sorry that you were not able to find a doctor or support group. I know it is common for doctors to charge a transfer fee to take on new patients. I love my doctor and his staff in Reston. (Dr. Robert Pinnar)

But since there seems to be quite a few of us living in Leesburg we could start one ourselves. Let me know if you guys like this idea!

I highly recommend Drs. Halmi and Tran of Virginia Weight Loss Surgical Center. They have offices in Vienna and Woodbridge. They have a great dietician (who lost 100 pounds!) and a good nurse practitioner, as well as a plastic surgeon on board. I was well educated in terms of knowing what this was about, and what it would involve.

I don't know their policy about accepting patients banded elsewhere, but it's worth a try. I have a high degree of trust in both doctors. The receptionist in Vienna makes an effort to learn everyone's name. :-)

Woodbridge: (703) 878-7610 | Vienna: (703) 865-8120

Also check out Fair Oaks Hospital, a Bariatric Center of Excellence, for their support options. Good luck!

Orea is right, Dr.'s Halmi and Tran, as well as their staff, are amazing. You DO NOT have to be a patient of to attend the support group meetings. They have 2 per month. More information can be found at Support Groups - Virginia Weight Loss Surgery Center.

I know this is an older thread, but I am in Leesburg as well. It looks like there are a few of us here. Did anything ever come about as to getting together/meeting? I'm a brand new bandbaby and would love to meet some people.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
