Problems after airplane flight....

Recommended Posts

Anybody out there ever have a problem with their band after flying on an airplane? I just came back from a trip with a 4 hour flight each way. I started having a problem on my trip after the first flight. I get almost everything caught in the band. The only relief is to lay down and the problem goes away quickly. (I can actually feel and hear the food move.)

I figured it was because being out of my normal routine and comfort zone, I was really hungry and didn't pay attention to taking small bites and chewing fully. But, I'm starting to wonder.

Yes, It's pretty common for the band to tighten up after flying. I have no idea why. Some people say it's the altitude, but it makes no sense to me. I have talked to quite a few people who have problems after flying.

I have to be really careful after flying. One time I was awake most of the night with terrible heartburn. I had to go on liquids for a couple of days after flying. Now I know to be really careful, eat soft foods and eat slowly taking small bites.

There is no medical reason for the band to get tighter with flying. Some people think it is an air pressure thing, but that's been disproven. This subject comes up all the time. I honestly think it is a dehydration thing - I think we tend to get dehydrated easier when we fly and I am convinced that this makes us tighter. I am not a doctor (I don't even play one on tv!!!) but it seems to me that it is the same reason people are often to tight in the morning - going that whole night without fluids. Anyway, it is just a theory, but it is my theory and I am sticking with it!

I get really tight when I fly but it usually goes away in a day. I can literally feel it get tighter and tighter during flight. Hope you feel better soon.

I certainly appreciate the information. I am flying tomorrow from Seattle to Orlando for the first time since my surgery (4/23). I had been wondering what the effects might be, I will be sure to pay attention to my Fluid intake and my good eating habits and hopefully it wont be an issue. I dont fly back for a week so if I have issues I will still have plenty of time to enjoy myself.

Thank you all for your replies. I am now a week home from my flight and the problem has gone away. So, for me, I'm going to be cautious next time I fly.

I actually have no idea if that was what the problem was, but for me I plan to be very careful next time. You will probably be on liquids after your surgery so you shouldn't have a problem. I would certainly ask your doctor about it. Just be very careful.
