I just got banded on May 21st

Recommended Posts

I was banded on may 22nd. I went to Mexico by myself and not with the best best support from my family. I am sore and not feeling very well. I guess I was naive about surgery and what it entails. It is a serious decision. I am having some regrets thinking maybe there was another way (knowing there really isn't). Ask me in a year and I bet I have never regretted again! Looking forward to going home tomorrow with no flight delays.

Don't gauge how you will feel a month from now on how you feel right now! Getting surgery can cause some emotional reactions as well as physical, and it's not uncommon to feel down and discouraged right afterwards. Give yourself some time to heal and you'll be feeling much better in a couple of days. Hope your trip home goes well.

Hey what a way to bring in Memorial weekend.

In memory of my Mother and Father who's lives were cut short due to health issues. I hope this surgery will give me the gift of health with energy and passion for life once again.

My life changed on this date...I'll remember it forever.

I was banded on 5/20/08. I arrived at 7 30 am, had the surgery at 9 30, that included an unexpected hernia repair. I was released to go home that afternoon at 4 30. The abdominal pain is bearable, but ohhhhhhh, the left neck, chest, shoulder pain from the carbon dioxide is horrendous. Gas X has done nothing for me. Someone told me to try a heating pad on my back to get the gas moving. I also heard that it tends to linger for awhile, my post op visit is on the 29th, but I have to go back to work one week to the day from surgery. Good luck to all who've just gone thru it, it will all be worth it, when we make it to goal!

I was banded 5/10. Your experience sounds exactly like mine. Same age, the hernia thing and of course the gas. I woke up in the recovery room and felt like I couldn't take a deep breath without extreme pain. Incisions? Oh, yeah ... that was no big deal. It took about 6 or 7 days until my gas pain went completely away. The doctor said 1-2 weeks so I was thrilled with only one week. It does get better every day though. Just do like they say, and it will eventually go away. Hope your job is not too physically demanding as I did have low energy for the first week. I am feeling at about 95% now and it has been 13 days. I don't regret it, but have had challenges (son's graduation dinner). Stay on the boards and learn. It really helps to know there are people that are going through the same thing. We can do it!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
